This is an explanation of why mattress encasements don’t work for bed bug problems and why you may wanna rethink your approach to bed bugs. Mattress encasements can cost hundreds of dollars and don’t work to your expectations.
If you are here because of bed bugs don't forget to check out my course on how to eliminate them on your own. I go over Bedrooms, Living Rooms, and even Automobiles.

For all those wondering...All pesticides are NOT equal! For those who have TRIED EVERYTHING I will almost bet a million dollars you haven't tried CROSSFIRE! Crossfire is a pesticide that I use in the elimination of bed bugs and works VERY WELL! The only homes I have treated where it doesn't eliminate the issue, there is a secondary bed bug infestation the bugs are coming in from. It may be from a neighboring apartment or even the school system spreading them around. Check my online store on Amazon for info on every pesticide I use for all sorts of bug problems INCLUDING CROSSFIRE! www.amazon.com/shop/greenakerspestcontrolllc

Buying pesticides from my store is not required but does help the channel and push me to do more helpful videos like this one. Video production isn't free and does cost time and effort for every one I post. If you plan on buying pesticides book mark my store for up-to-date lists of problem solving bug sprays and other contraptions that also work!

@@GreenAkersPC I bought crossfire from a link on your do it your own pest control site. I found a bug on my bed Wednesday. Have been sick with strep throat all the week of july 4th. Had to put my cat to sleep on monday and found a stupid ass bed bug on Wednesday. I'm living with my mother who is a hoarder so this is going to be a task. I need help on a sprayer. Idk what kind and I also live in a town with nothing. Nowhere to shop at. I have a Lowe's and walmart about 20 minutes away. Money is also a factor. Being poor sucks but it really sucks when dealing with this crap. I'm so scared. I'll be doing all this by myself so wish me luck.

I absolutely hate this! I found an infestation on my mattress and everything I read or watch online all contradicts each other. I hired Bed Bakers in Columbus, Ohio. They originally used heat treatment but changed their treatment to a type of fungus that works better. He told us to buy Saferest mattress encasements and we put them on all the mattresses and box springs in our home, even though I literally wondered why I was doing that when they will just live underneath them. He sprayed some type of fungus that kills them and that they spread to each other. I haven't seen a bed bug since and I trust that what he did worked, but I can't know for sure. The encasements were $75 each, the treatment was over $700. I know there are still bugs on my mattress under that encasement. I live with my sister and her four year old son. We are sleeping together in the living room. We plan to move and I want to hire someone to just throw away everything left that I own. I already threw away about 70 percent of what I owned. I want to move with literally nothing, but I know she doesn't want to throw away her son's stuff so I don't know what to do. I might have to just move into a place without them and it is breaking my heart. She is a cleaner person than I was, but I don't want to take anything. I have an extreme bug phobia.

This has been tough on us 73 yr old's, stressed, in tears and back breaking. We bought a new mattress, in March 2023, Serta Quilted Hybrid (memory foam and put on encasement. No box springs). I don't believe we can spray the bed,. We sprayed the frame, and everywhere possible Used our steamer to steam slowly the carpet, frame under and around dresser, cleaned out old clothes and anything Un-useable -CRAP . QUESTION : Should we remove this encasement now, and leave off ?

Considering a one income family to which we are considered poor, might as well get rid of everything start from scratch and move. Cannot afford anyone to come out and do treatments. Nor will the apartment complex I live in do anything about it. This was not our fault and to us getting them. Someone came over and we got them. I also have pets. I have to think of my kids and my pets. We rely on paycheck to paycheck. Heaven help if one thing goes wrong and then we are behind on bills. We keep getting treatments because our neighbours in the building refuse to allow the management to treat their place, and their problem continues spreading. Treating our apartment is only temporary because of that. My only real solution is to move. I think I'll need new furniture to be safe, but I was wondering if it's safe for me to take my books? My bed was bought new in May of '21. I don't have a box springs. I have an adjustable cloth bed frame. As soon as the bed was delivered, I put the mattress in an encasement and it's been in there ever since, but I did take it off once to wash it and put it right back on. I think it is gross to not be able to wash it. Fast forward to now, I think there may be bed bugs. My bedroom smells so strongly of a musty old person's bedroom and I do get bit from time to time. Problem is, I haven't been able to see any live bugs, but all over my apartment (I live in a 4-plex) there are these little black or red things that look like dried up bugs. They are everywhere! I'm afraid they are living in that dark brown cloth bed frame. I'm thinking it would be impossible for me to find them and if I do what a nightmare. Thank you for your informative videos. I'm subscribing now. Apologies for the long comment.

I have some plants (flowers and such in pots) that are in the apartment, and I know they won't survive heat. Is there a way to treat them or am I just going to need to bite the bullet and very sadly throw them away? I would just leave them outside, but I live in a part of the country where they would not survive the winter. Thank you so much for your time and thank you for this video!

This is not something I can do by myself - already had a heat treatment w Chemicals which helped but now 4 mo later there were some on top of encasement not torn either ? We found some on the bunky board my daughter had to trash immediately! Steamed and used chemical. Putting trap to test as we have not seen any ! My apartment complex does not want to replace my carpet even after 10 years and they wanted me to only deal w their contractor which was way to expensive w only a 30 day warranty for this type of bug???

Hey Jason, your videos are absolutely awesome and have really helped me get through this indescribably horrific experience of having an infestation. I appreciate how understanding you seem to be of how awful it is too - that is helpful, because most people just don't know what it's like. I DO have a couple questions - I'll try to keep this short. I moved into a new apartment that had an infestation that no one knew about. I had a heat treatment, and a week later the exterminator came back to follow up with a spray (he also uses Crossfire, btw). Before he did this, he insisted I remove the mattress encasements - and I didn't understand why. I attempted to ask him (politely) just so I could understand, and he immediately became rude and defensive, and didn't tell me why, but rather just told me that I needed to do what he said otherwise I'd have to pay for treatment (landlord pays here in MN). In the end of course I did what he said, but since I didn't understand why (and because my landlord said I should do this also), immediately afterwards I bought new encasements and put them on, and still have them on. I of course now understand your rationale of why that's not something one should do...BUT, now, a month later, I'm getting a bite or two once a week while sleeping (I believe that to be the case because I'm very sensitive to their bites and think they show up very shortly after they happen). As an additional piece of info I recently bought an aerosol can of Crossfire and treated my desk chair(s) at work (and successfully so, as I was getting bites at work, and am not any longer). Since I have a lot left in that can, here are my questions: As far as strictly Crossfire treatment, would it be at all effective to leave the encasements on and spray Crossfire where mattress meets box spring, or is there any reason I should not do that? I'm guessing you're going to recommend removing the encasements - I'm just thinking since this seems to be the very end of this infestation maybe it's not necessary? My rationale is that any of the what must be 1-2 bugs crawling from anywhere below the mattress will have to walk through the Crossfire and won't really even make it to me, or will die shortly thereafter if they do. Please let me know what you think - can't wait to be just completely done and past this. Thank you!!!

@@GreenAkersPC I got the encasements in a panic after finding the infestation a roommate left. I steam ironed each side of each mattress and box spring twice, sprayed with crossfire, after a few days and a bug check I put the encasements on, sprayed the encasements, added a mattress cover before sheets--but always kept every top layer sprayed. I didn't put a lot of faith in the encasements, but they (and the mattress cover) are white so I figured it would make it easier to spot any new signs. I'm in the process of treating the rest of the house with Crossfire and Cimexa. There are some outlet covers painted shut that are going to be trouble since I'll have to dig the screws out from multiple layers of paint (not my doing).

I don't have any box elder videos...It's not a common occurrence enough to grab footage but I will see what I can throw together. I usually recommend treating cracks and crevices out doors, even behind gutters and door mats. Also try to find the tree they are breeding on and treat that tree. Granules between affected trees help keep them off the house as well.

Maybe napalm my house or start wearing a hazmat suit to bed!!! We are almost positive that our new bedroom furniture in our new home came from the 2 guys and a standard white box truck delivery:( I've read through every comment here for help/advice. Ironic that someone asked if you ever brought any home... I just had a conversation in a parking lot with a guy from Ehrlich pest control. The man said that his wife was going to throw him out for this. (He did get rid of them). I think to myself, if he brings them home... How do I know that he is not going to bring more into my home??? My question to you is, what do hospitals use to control this bed bug problem that is working??? My daughter is an RN and they have to sometimes close off a room due to this problem.

Hey Jason great video. I too live in Virginia. Big Stone Gap Virginia. I too have battled bed bugs off & on for a couple of years now. I have had some luck with the Ortho bed bug max but I am still seeing on average a bug daily in or around my bed area. I have searched my entire bed & the area around my bed & cannot find a nest. I have read several reports that Diatomaceous Earth is pretty effective for killing bed bugs. Any thoughts about this product or suggestions?? Thanks

I've been getting bit by SOMETHING every night for the past week, but I can't see any signs of bedbugs anywhere. No nits, no bugs, no eggs, no droppings... nothing. When I had them as a child, my mom called them "spider bites", but someone mentioned it could be bedbugs and I've been freaking out. I got a $20 plastic mattress encasement, but can't go out to buy a bedbug lure/trap because we're in a snowstorm right now. How can I tell if I might have bedbugs without a lure? In the meantime, I've been washing all my bedding in extra hot water, and checking through my entire wardrobe...
