Bed Preparation In The Market Garden

Here is how we prepare our permanent beds using minimum tillage techniques.
To start off, our soil is covered with a UV treated black tarp for two to three weeks. This smothers the previous crop and cleans out
the weeds.
Raised beds have a tendency to settle over time.So we use a rotary
plow fixed to our walking tractor to build them up again.
We then use a broadfork to deeply aerate the soil and encourage root development in the next vegetable crop
We spread the amendments over the bed and mix them in with a rotary harrow to a depth of 2 inches. The rotary harrow has a roller in the back that tamps down the soil and levels the bed. The bed is now ready to receive the crop.
Not counting the tarp treatment, it takes about 30 minutes to prepare one 100-foot-long bed. For maximum efficiency in the preparation step, all the tools we use are standardized to a width of
30 inches and can do the job completely in a single
pass. The elements of our system are described below

Can you put the 6mm black silage tarp right onto the grass for a while and then continue with the process you are showing or do you have to put the tarp on preexisting beds for this method to work. Also, would you plant straight into this or would you do the stale seedbed technique on the beds first. I want to create my own raised beds and I am wondering wether I can put the tarp straight on the grass.

I'm glad I found your channel back I don't know why I couldn't find it maybe cuz I was looking under your name and I just forgot all about it used to be on my feet and then it dropped off but it still said I subscribe so that was weird. Do you add rocks to your beds? Or is that just natural the reason why I'm asking is this good for drainage? And do you guys do your own worm castings? Or what do you use for compost you make your own?

Hey JM, a friend of mine purchased 5 acres of pastureland in Oregon's Willamette Valley and beginning this summer we are going to start flattening land and installing drainage tile to begin growing bio-intensively for the 2017 growing season. I've read your book, read Elliot Coleman's New Organic Grower as well as a few other small farming books, with many more in the mail. My question is which style of irrigation do you prefer to use for a bio-intensive system?

Do you broadfork every planting or just in the spring?

According to the book he forks the beds that will have crops which benefit from loose soil. Some crops don't need it as much. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I think your right, but he also talks about giving the same conditions to every bed/plant. I was just wondering if later in the summer of that step is skipped since the soil has roots of previous crops in it. Thanks for the heads up.

Have you had schooling in agriculture, and why or why not? Would you recommend for or against? Is life experience enough?

Schooling? For market gardening and Urban Farming, it's not "necessary" to "go to school." It certainly HELPS A TON to get EDUCATION regarding this career! Whether you're "going to a classroom," or you're simply watching KZbin videos, reading books, taking online courses, interning, working for a farmer/mentor, etc, education is paramount to success in ANY walk of life. Good luck, Brad! -John in Montana

@Jean-Martin Fortier - How long can I leave a tarp on my garden bed? Is it okay for me to do that from fall to spring? OR is it better if it's only a short time? Thanks!
@bmoney399
@bmoney399 4 жыл бұрын
Im not Jean Martin, but yea, its a great idea. You don't have to worry about waiting on dry soil and can get into the ground earlier. Plus the longer you tarp, the better according to Neversink farm.
@Ptitnain2
@Ptitnain2 2 жыл бұрын
@@bmoney399 You still want some humidity in your soil. There are living organism under there that are decomposing the plants that you want to get rid of. If you can put it during fall after a rain, or when the soil is not dry you should be good.

Is it a Canadian "thing" to have narrow walkways between the beds? Curtis Stone has the same obsession.
@irishnorskymadness
@irishnorskymadness 7 жыл бұрын
It's all about context. If you have the space for larger walkways, use it. If not, and you can fit an extra bed of production into your bed area, then narrow walkways are simply useful to utilize more space into beds. For example, one extra bed can equal over 1k worth of sales by the end of a season. That's a lot of money for most of us! You're literally "walking on money" if you have wide(r) walkways! I hope this helps. Cheers! -John in Montana
