Burt Rutan video about Bede brought me here. Scary stuff. Bede’s philosophy reminds me of George Costanza’s motto…”It’s not a lie if YOU believe it!”

I knew Jim Bede. And Corky Fornhoff, he flew the first trs-18 jet BD5. Richard Bach flew his BD5-J out of his runway in ocala. This video is priceless. If people only knew.

I am the proud owner of a kit, the more I learn about it the more I love it
@alexwigley65746 жыл бұрын
The BD-5 was WAY ahead of it's time! It was a sensation! Thousands of kits were ordered in the first year, when most airplane manufacturers would be ecstatic with 50 orders a year... Sadly, it was a bankrupt engine manufacturer/supplier and the long process of solving torsional resonance in the drive system that eventually lead to bankruptcy. Modern lightweight engines have finally caught up with the BD-5 in both the prop version and the jet version! Now it's better than ever!!! Five BD-5s were at Oshkosh 2018! FIVE FIVES!!!!!
@Cokie9072 жыл бұрын
Of course, an airplane is absolutely no good without a reliable engine. Unless it's a glider... 😂 I'm assuming all those BD-5's were jet powered? Btw, The SONEX jet Jsx-2T is almost the spitting image of the BD-5, except it sports a V-tail.

@thefactorypilot145 _Every high-energy documentary and action drama in the 1970's had this sort of orchestral music._ _You hear it in 1973, during weekly episodes of "The Six Million Dollar Man."_ _And later in 1978, the Friday evening soap opera "Dallas" opened with a similar and indelible tune._

People don't understand. It requires precise building, understanding of this aircraft to work correctly. It takes a very specific powerplant to make it whole. Every one of these pilots were good pilots. Just unfortunate circumstances , usually powerplant related. If done correctly, is an amazing design. The turbine, even though impressive, was more of a gimmick. Cool,...but a gimmick.

So the whole kit only costs $2,000?Does that include the engine with it as well?im sure the jet engine the kit will cost about $7,500 total cost?
@kurtfrancis46212 жыл бұрын
The costs in the early 70s were more like double. Bede sold the kits for less than what they cost in hopes of selling other items (avionics, etc) on the back end. There are other videos describing the problems with the BD-5. I would compare it to the DeLorean in the early 80s. Great concept vehicle, but lacking a powerful & durable engine at a low cost.
@Cokie9072 жыл бұрын
Yeah, $2,000 in 1970 dollars. Now, factor in the loss in purchasing power of the US DOLLAR since 1971 when Nixon ended linkage to gold and the costs of the FDR-LBJ welfare-entitlement state required massive printing of currency. The dollar today buys about 1/15th of what it did in 1970 so the kit would start out at least around $30,000.
@EllipsisAircraft5 ай бұрын
The price was with a snowmobile engine and propeller. The jet came later, and it was expensive. Probably over $200,000 in today's dollars. Just look who operated them.

"Kit" in the 1970s was the same as "Kit" model airplane. An assembly of materials smashed into approximate shapes that had to be trimmed and formed, fastened together. Then the real work came, finishing times of 1,000 hours were not out of the ordinary. Vans, Rans, and Sonex changed the meaning of "kit" airplane.

I wonder what the performance would be like if they replaced the metal wing and fuselage with composite parts.
@topsecret18376 жыл бұрын
seoceancrosser They had always used composites ever since Bede brought Burt Rutan onto the design. That’s why you see the vertical tail and the use of composites.
@TylerKirkFilms6 жыл бұрын
According to a generalized presumption in my aeronautical engineering books you can count on greater that 5% increase in performance by using composite parts instead of aluminum. I think it would be awesome to see a carbon fiber bd5
@EllipsisAircraft5 ай бұрын
@@TylerKirkFilms composites are not always better. Burt Rutan has stated publicly that the VariEZ would have been 10% lighter if made of aluminum. But composites resist fatigue, and corrosion better. They also support laminar flow, but only with proper a design and precise construction. A commercial manufacturer with lots of resource might see a 5% improvement.
