Bedford still healing after D-Day loss of 20 young men

Bedford, Virginia, is a small town of fewer than 7,000 people nestled in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains. As in many small towns in the 1940s, the corner drugstore was the place to be. But on July 17, 1944, it was the spot where everything changed in a matter of minutes.

I was at the D-Day Memorial, in Bedford, last month. The tour guide asked our group if anyone knew who the Bedford Boys were. I answered correctly that they were members of Alpha Company, and were killed or wounded in the first five minutes of landing.

I agree. A few years ago I found the book "The Bedford Boys" on Amazon which is their story. I highly recommend reading it. This town suffered through the ultimate sacrifice 20 times! An incredible story. I also visited the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford, which was quite emotional. In our group touring the memorial was a D-Day survivor who provided even more facts about that day. Needless to say we were all mezmorized by his stories and in tears. At the memorial is also were I learned about the assault on Point-du-hoc, which is a whole other story in itself. True heroes, each one of these D-Day men.

"The Bedford Boys" could be the title of a great war movie! To lose 20 men, from one National Guard unit, would be devastating! These men served together & probably went to school together, so this "one day" in the war, changed the town of Bedford, forever! (I served in a NY Army National Guard unit in the 60's, so I could imagine that loss) R.I.P.! (p.s. my youngest grandson was born on 06/06/2014, the 70th anniversary!)

Imagine the towns and villages in Russia who lost hundreds of men or had their entire young male population wiped out...the battles in Normandy were mere skirmishes compared to the titanic bloody battles on the eastern front.

What is she talking about? She learned about Bedford boys last year? Bedford is where the U.S. National D Day Memorial is. It was dedicated in 2001 more than freaking 20 years ago. A reporters ignirance should bot be reported as if it is a new discovery. Shame on you.
