My bedside sword is the Cold Steel Kopis Machete! Light, sharp, made by one of the best manufacturers out there, and closely resembling the Iberian Falcata (one of many all time favorite swords) it’s the sword I put my trust in! 😎

The reason for the round handle was it wasn't primarily a cutting weapon. The way the Roma's fought was from a phalanx. Shields up to form a wall and you'd advance and stab from under and around your shield.

I always modify, shape, wrap handles of my blades. I would suggest do it before you need it in actual combat.

Traditional gladii had round handles Because they were optimized for fighting with a really big shield mostly by thrusting

There were many variations that were hexagonal in cross-section so you could still use it as described, while keeping edge alignment. Some were oval as well, kinda depends on the period.

sure but keep in mind that these things can chop a hand off super easy. from the information i collected round handles are all over the place though, i feel like people started to think about it when longer and pointier swords were more common and it was harder to get a good cut without a proper edge alignment. unfortunately they didn't leave us any clue about this :)

True gladius were oval-shaped instead of round, I assume round is more common now due to the easy of production on a lathe as opposed to oval. It is heavily designed as a thrusting weapon as seen by the very fine point and the thin to thick taper of the blade. The Pila was thrown to either disable the enemy's shields or break up the formation and then the legionaries would lead with the shield and stab at stomach level when close enough. They did use them to slash but it wasn't the main nor preferred method of attack.

I remember reading that it was developed as an economic measure to discourage slashing, which was rarely final and required the employment of pike men to walk around and finish the job after the battle. Not sure if that’s true but I it sounds like a typical Roman efficiency innovation.

I suggest not slashing or hacking away with a gladius. They are foremost a stabbing sword meant to puncture chainmail and plate. Nice quick and powerful stabs behind A big shield is how it's used

The Gladius is for stabbing and short slashes. not chopping..they also fought with large shields and pikes and heavy armor. To penitrate the armor in weak spots and through chain armor u had to stab at joints and at the neck or limbs aimed at arteries when possible.

Dont really need to index on a Stabbing weapon. The gladius was built for thrusting not cutting. Doesn't matter where your edges are as long as the point can get into the other guy

Just for safety reasons, it is usually a good idea to put your off hand either on your hip, chest, or behind your back when swinging around a single-handed sword. So you don't accidentally hit your own arm.

Tex Yat; In use there would be lots of blood. Get that on the handle and you’d have trouble holding it in a struggle, so I would want flat sides and more texture.

TFW may not specialize in European swords but the few they do look better than the companies who do specialize in European swords. They do great work! I know the owner is Ron Kisakowski and I have seen some of his demonstration videos. Maybe you can invite him onto a live in the future? He's a Kali practitioner like yourself so it would be an interesting watch to see you talk with someone familiar with that martial art. And the Roman gladius is notorious for that cylinder handle. Ancient era swords didn't "discover" the benefits of having an elliptical "apple seed" handle until the classical era. It could be better for practical use but it is historically accurate the way you got your gladius.

A more common weapon for gladiators would have been the sika. Similar profile to the gladius but had a down turned spike tip designed to reach around shields

The round hilt is accurate, if you were to make 2 flat spots opposite each other it would no longer be a gladius. The blade is not accurate, the scabbard is not accurate... just a desk piece.

The blade on a typical gladius was from the finger tip to the elbow on an average sized man. So the length seems appropriate the thickness of the blade seems a bit much but the overall profile looks really good

All of the Roman swords are round in the grip. Remember they are meant to be a stabbing sword. And that is more deadly than the cut. You can also lay your index finger along the side of the guard. I have several Roman swords made by Albion. I have 85 Albions. And maybe 200 other swords and old sabers.
