Right! I mean.. it's not like professional hunters are actually familiar with thier equipment or anything like that. Hunters usually can't shoot for shit, and have no idea of things like trajectory, windage, elevation, etc, when discharging weapons. Hunters usually just rely on luck, or, "I'll just pull the trigger, abd hope for the best". Right???

@malachimatcho7583 3 жыл бұрын
@Lazar MMA Right. I've read at least over a dozen times about people shooting these animals while standing still, and bullets having no effect. I don't believe that many hunters would miss hitting a target that's easily 3 times the size of the animals they're used to hunting. Does it make sense that professional hunters would flat out miss a much larger, massive target???
@malachimatcho7583
@malachimatcho7583 3 жыл бұрын
@Lazar MMAThere's nothing supernatural about it. They're shooting at the animal center mass where it's hide is the thickest. If you've read enough encounters people have had with these things, you'd have heard accounts where time was taken to carefully place thier shots, and the impact of the bullet was heard. The would either ignore it, get up and move away, or get pissed. I'm not claiming anything supernatural. Thier chest is protected by extremely thick, tough hide and the people shooting are hitting the area most protected against bullets. Read more encounters people have had. Maybe some of them missed, but that's not what's happening in all the cases.

The first wolf was stuffed and brought to the castle, I think that it degraded over time. The creature that Chastel shot decomposed during the trip to the castle and when it finally arrived it was so disgusting that the king ordered it to be burned/buried. They did do an autopsy on both of them though. The First beast was a huge wolf with some strange characteristics while the second one was said to be a smaller wolf with some strange measurements/features.

Oliver Hill It's possible that it was a hyena; the people of a small French village in the 18th century had probably never heard of/seen a hyena before, and would probably mistake it for some form of wolf. Also, hyenas (namely spotted ones) have been known to go after women and children more often than men (although they will attack a human male). I'll admit, though, that it doesn't explain why it was only brought down by a silver bullet, or how it avoided previously set traps.

They found its bones in a box. It was a hyena, the same.giy that killed it worked for a circus or something and would get animals from Africa. They figure it was a conspiracy to get people to come running to the Catholic Church. He didn't tip his bullet with silver he casted it from a silver medallion of the virgin. They king had the stuffed animal then it went to a museum then at some point it got stored away. Just the bones remained. U can look it up my sir's.

I remember being in the middle of a supernatural kick in my teens reading about this and theorizing what it could've been. All the pictures and stories I heard of it made me think of something similar to an amphicyon at the time. Looking back at it now, it was most likely an exotic pet that had broken out from some noble's menagerie or possibly an escapee from a circus.

@@osakarose5612 That's where most theories fall through. I do know that in some instances the attack was interrupted, but that wasn't always the case. The only thing I can think of is that it was a serial killer, that used a creature as his weapon of choice. What if someone had a wolf and crossed it with a large dog breed like a mastiff or a Great Dane? There could 've been a Countess Bathory situation, but this theory involves a lot of moving pieces to work I feel like. It's also possible that the bodies were in such poor shape that it was hard to tell if they had been fed upon. Plus i don't trust that the local village or army detachment had any sort of medical professional preform autopsies. Let alone look at the bodies.

It could have been a Wolf with agromeglia or giantism. Also, there are tons of examples of wild animals evading hunters on an almost supernatural level. There have been cases such as 4 Finnish soldiers being killed by the Wolves they were sent to hunt and kill. European Wolves have a well deserved reputation for killing people. In North America, not so much. Actually hardly any cases of it. But it has happened. Anyhow, with a wolf with a case of giantism, it would explain it being hit by shots, and seeming to be unharmed. If it has large bones.

Experts today believe the animal was a lion. I often wonder if it was one of the last surviving members of the dire wolf, but its behavior is more cat like in nature when you do further research. Witnesses described it as having a low rumbling growl and thats not canine/wolf like but you will find that in large cats specifically the lion it does have a low rumble like growl that can be heard for miles out.however, i dont believe this to be a werewolf i think it was an animal but one that was not native to france.

France was plagued by wolf attacks for 400 years, I didn't hear this version of the legend of the red-haired giant wolf. The legend I heard ends differently. All of the people stood together and fought off 100 wolves, the red-haired wolf would face off against this guy in a 1vs1 after everyone had surrounded the red-haired wolf. He done it out of a sign of respect, they would fight to the death and he would stab his spear into the wolf as it attacked, due to the weight and force of the attacking wolf it slid down the spear and would proceed to rip the guys throat out. Both beast and man would lay beside each other, embracing one another in this final act as they bled to death.

As a biologist I would have to say the adolescent lion theory is by far the best. This video left out some of the physical description details, like its' having a long tail with a tuft at the end, also a dark dorsal stripe. And considering the primitive firearm technology of the time, if anyone actually managed to get a bullet (Edit: MUSKET BALL) into it, it was likely in a non-vital body part. Considering how badly everyone wanted it killed, if you had shot at it, would you say "I missed and just scared it away" or "I hit it but it had no effect!"
@NostalgicMem0ries
@NostalgicMem0ries Жыл бұрын
i highly doubt it, its the movie Brotherhood of wolf that fetched this theory to mases, yet it dont make sense, lion would not survive multiple years in france, cold winters etc, they prefer hot climate, savanas and stuff. for me its either abnormaly large wolf or if we go to foreign animals, most likely it is hyena or some hybrid with wolf, since all witnesses said it looked like wolf just was way larger than normal size and slightly weird looking. hyena can fit this profile very well

@@NostalgicMem0ries French winters aren't that bad at all, and lions could easily tolerate it. Zoos in much colder locations have lions without indoor access all through the winter. And lions lived in France until the Bronze Era (not cave lions but ones like the modern African lion).
@NostalgicMem0ries
@NostalgicMem0ries Жыл бұрын
@@audreymuzingo933 First of all, French winters are not the same as African winters, where lions have evolved to thrive. The average temperature in France during winter is around 5°C, while in Africa it is around 20°C. That's a huge difference for an animal that has no fur or fat to protect it from the cold. Secondly, zoos that keep lions in colder climates usually provide them with heated shelters, blankets, and extra food to help them cope with the stress of low temperatures. They also monitor their health and behavior closely to ensure they are not suffering from frostbite, hypothermia, or depression. Thirdly, the lions that lived in France until the Bronze Era were not exactly like the modern African lion. They belonged to a different subspecies, called the European cave lion, which was larger and had a thicker coat than its African cousin. They also went extinct due to human hunting and habitat loss, not because they adapted to the climate. Theoretically they could survive one or two warm winters, but its unlikely as historical records suggest winters were pretty harsh at that time. Hyenas would have way higher chance especially since they are so closely related to wolves and could technically breed
@audreymuzingo933
@audreymuzingo933 Жыл бұрын
@@NostalgicMem0ries I literally said NOT CAVE LIONS. And heated blankets and what-not? -do you not realize lions have been kept in zoos in Russia, northern Europe, and North America since long before electricity or veterinarians knew anything besides livestock and pets? They lived in concrete floored cages and were fed horse meat, and still are to this day in many places, including the Little Rock Zoo where I worked (horse "knees" shipped from Mexico), and it got plenty cold there, but the only thing that could get the lions to go indoors was at feeding time, otherwise they LOVED it outside in winter -they especially loved it when it snowed. Despite thousands of years of isolation to tropical Africa, their genes still signal coding for a winter coat, just like housecats that get to go outside get longer hair in the winter, but fully indoor ones don't. Matter of fact that's probably another reason the French villagers didn't recognize it as a lion -no mane but long shaggy hair all over the body -that would look more like a strange wolf. Believe it was really a wolf if you want, but again as a biologist (with emphasis in zoology by the way, not microbes or whatever, and I have worked with all kinds of big cats) I am telling you, a lion would do just fine in the French countryside, with plenty of sheep, pigs, goats, and the occasional hare, for meals. And by the way, big cats including lions have a wayyyyyy longer rap sheet for hunting humans than wolves do, at any time or place in recorded history.

But they are highly aggressive toward perceived threats. And they are small bears, 200-300 lbs tops. It was probably slim as the French countryside lacks the large termite mounds they are used to. I can see how someone that wasn't super familiar with bears could think a skinny sloth bear was a huge wolf like animal. Nobody that saw it said it was a wolf, they said wolf like. & They are considerably bigger than a wolf.

As many aristocrats, nobles and royals had exotic animals bought from Africa, Asia and maybe other regions as well, those poor animals being caged or kept in an enclosure somewhat like a stable and their purpose being only to be a source of entertainment and wonder for them and their guests, some of those animals maybe escaped or got released on purpose. So this explains why only one hiena, or a lone african wild dog can make ravages by preying only on women and children while other animals within the Gevaudan forested area that they may enlist as prey are not known to them at all... So through hunger and starvation they prey on the obvious and weak prey. While many witnesses at that time described it as a giant undiscovered species of canine, even larger than a grizly bear, larger than the prehistoric dire wolf I believe they just used to always exagerate so that maybe some authorities may begin to act faster and slay the beast. I always wanted to believe the giant undiscovered canine and I loved the schetches of the beast but the logical explanation is that the beast was an escaped or released exotic predator.

Metal armour would not stop a musket ball, that is why it stopped being issued to soldiers as the invention of guns proliferated. Once you have guns traditional medieval armour became superfluous. There is a very good French movie about this story, called Le pacte des loups (Brotherhood of the Wolf was the English title I believe) made in 2001. Personally, I like the stories here where at least you can take it for a fact that the thing did actually happen. This is one of these.

There's a great episode of the podcast Lore which covers this very subject. I highly recommend it if you want to hear about this tale from another perspective. Great job as always with the new upload boys.

Just saw your 'making of' video earlier, noticed your names. Went to my kindle and twigged that I got your guys book from the amazon prime rental thing, (the names I noticed in the video earlier) . Not knowing it was you guys, or noticing the resemblance of your skull brand I got it anyways. Mind you I can be a div at times. Maybe you should put the book info in your description with twitter etc.

"where to shove his reward." Back into the coffers, my reward is service to thy Majesty and France! "and whatever was happening now, was their problem." And the French royalty wondered why their people rose up against them.
