Breathtaking, yes it is, Chad! Everyone, that goes deeper into their catalogue must say, brothers Gibb are absolutely super-heavyweigts in history of modern music. And I'll tellya, they always would have made it, whenever they would have been born. Timeless genius always wins! Sometimes, such real gems have to be discovered lateron. But it's never too late and that's a fact!

@allisons36633 жыл бұрын
By the time "Living Eyes" was released, nearly 2 1/2 years had passed since the release of their last album and so much had changed in that time. The Bee Gees brand was, to be kind, going through a really rough time, so it's not surprising that the album and singles did not fare well. The Gibb writing and production team was on fire in the early 80's, so it was kind of an F You to the industry that wouldn't play a record with the group name on it.
@mujahidamin85043 жыл бұрын
@@allisons3663 Yes but great songs remain great songs, even in shit environments. Take the title track for example - a well made music video together with the brothers getting one of their high profile fans to promote it on the media would have propelled a brilliant song to the top end of the charts. the song needed a soaring video - a classic and epic video - perhaps of a young soldier or football player returning home etc....lol....you know what I mean sweethearts.

Oh Barry!! It's powerful and gentle at the same time. Barry's voice and this miracle he created are perfection. What a wonderful start to a gorgeous Sunday morning. So many factors contributed to making an album a success. They wanted to evolve from their previous r&b dance beat type of sound, but the public and industry wasn't ready to give them that grace yet. Also, this was their last album on the RSO label before it was absorbed into Polydor, so promotion was minimal. No matter, we still get to hear this magic. Thanks Chad.

They definitely incorporated their lives into songs. When they were in the pop wilderness between 1972 and the 1975 comeback, we have Barry’s Dogs, then on Main Course Songbird and the prophetic Wind of Change, then COTW has Can’t Keep A Good Man Down. They had experienced a lot in Australia, then UK before break up, then a comeback, then into the pop wilderness, before a HUGE 5 year run, before being cast out again during another change in the industry between the 70’s and 80’s. Always those kids being moved around in the night because their dad hadn’t paid the rent, not fitting in at school when they did go, and Girls’ parents discouraging the association. They all carried a bit of a chip on their shoulders. People in the industry used them to great success, but never really gave them the same respect as the Beatles, for example. Never allowed to be part of the popular crowd. But it just seemed to drive them to work all the harder. The success as songwriters of 1980’s projects for Streisand, Rogers, Ross, Warwick, and songs for Andy, Twiity, Orbison/Gatlin, etc. could not be denied. The 1987 comeback with YOU WIN AGAIN is another message within a love song, and IMMORTALITY is Barry’s life anthem. BE WHO YOU ARE is clearly a personal/family pep talk, and a message to the industry and public at the same time that he’s not going anywhere. They were also aware that MJ struggled within the industry in a similar way. After he died, Robin said (I’m paraphrasing) the time for praise shouldn’t be after an artist dies, MJ died feeling rejected and unloved by his industry and piers, and may still be alive if he had heard even a bit of the praise they were giving after his death... why does an artist have to die or a group break up to get respect? He was definitely speaking from their own personal experience. Robert Stigwood was also always a bit of an outsider in the industry. Misfits, but geniuses, all.

I appreciate the breadth and depth of your knowledge and that you take the time to share it. Your writing reliably expands my perspective and insight and often resolves my questions and conflicting ideas. You often refer to additional songs and performances which I also really appreciate. When I am feeling discouraged Bee Gee’s How Can You Mend a Broken Heart, Lauren Daigle’s You Say and this amazing song are a few that I turn to for helping me to get back on track. Barry’s voice is powerful and tender and it sounds as if he gives this recording everything he has, the lyrics are beautiful - this song has been a gift.

Thanks for your reaction to this song Chad....I love the living eyes album. The Beegees genius and versatility and superb songwriting and singing talent not only created their mark in music history as being able to keep up with all of the genres of different decades...but it also cemented that (in my opinion) were the best band or group in music history of all time. They would be great no matter when they were born. They're genuises. Sometimes people in relationships whether it's a romantic relationship or a friend or whatever.....will change some of who they are to fit in and be accepted by others. This song is saying that you shouldn't have to do that. We should be accepted for who we are and not feel like we have to change something about who we are to fit in. This I think happens a lot....in all kinds of forums... relationships, work, social gatherings, sometimes in churches, etc. I think this is a beautiful song and is beautifully written . I hope we can all be who we are and not feel like we have to change to be accepted and to fit in. We are all unique and should be proud of who we are. I'm glad the Beegees stayed true to who they were and didn't change.

Versatility in melodies, musical genres and arrangements plus beautiful harmony it makes Bee Gees unparalleled and incomparable with any musical group. Thanks for playing this song Chad. I never heard it before! Wow! Beautiful lyrics, singing and instrumentation! I love Barry’s voice here! I know this is a love song but I keep getting another meaning of this masterpiece! There were so many times when The Bee Gees were ridiculed for being who they were as a musical group. It upsets me when The Bee Gees are interviewed and the person doing the interview has to pretend that they can sing falsetto. To me it is very rude and degrading. Performing a falsetto is extremely difficult. They wanted to be an R and B group. Unfortunately, once they hit big during the disco era..people forgot how successful they were prior to the disco era and were only seen as disco artists. The backlash of disco caused them to be treated so poorly by DJs in America. Seriously, DJs promoting Bee Gees free weekends. I can’t remember any artist or group being punished for their excellent songs. Luckily, they wrote songs that they loved. I am so blessed to hear there music!

PS - Amen on Chad's reactions. More so than any reactor, through the diverse song choices, he has opened a lot of eyes to the essential and unique qualities, abilities and personalities of ALL of the brothers. I readily admit that so many in the public lacking knowledge about the massive contributions of all three has bothered me for a long time. Many, including Chad himself, appeared totally unaware (no offense Chad - you're just a spring chicken by my standards!) at the start of his reactions about the scope of the Bee Gees catalog and amazing talents of Mo and Rob. They must never be forgotten as 2/3 of arguably the greatest group of singers and composers in the mid to late 20th century (perhaps 20th C period!).
