This song is a masterpiece. Heartbroken and melancholy, we can all recognize a little bit now that so many of us are elderly. But I also think of those immense musicians who were the Gibb brothers who composed it very young. The video that accompanies it testifies to the deep bond between Barry and Robin that has remained like this all their lives even if their character has sometimes divided them. But all the brothers fight all the more as they also shared their working life and stayed together for many decades. The ending leaves you speechless.

@Michael Triba, I was born in 1956 in Brazil. Like you, I've listenned to The Bee Gees's songs ten of thousands of times. Among all of them, the one I've liked the most was surely "First of May". I used to sing this song everywhere, everytime, even I'd no idea what was the meanning of it. I was a teenager and no knowlegde of English language (and I don't have it well until now) but I often tried to sing it. Yesterday, 1st of may 2021, I offered this song to a friend for her Birthday. She is 30 years old and have never heard about The Bee Gees. So, I was trying to know a bit more about the song, when I read your post. 😥😥💔 So haven't I. (you said: "I never quite realized until now what a sad and tragic love song that First of May is). Thanks anyway. For now on, I will look after more information about. At 60th, 70th , 80th this was impossible and very few we knew here in Brazil. And as adult, the attention was through work, home..... God bless you.

Thank you Ms.@@marialee7321 ! 🤗 Yes, when we were growing up in the 50's and 60's, we listened to the music, but did not pay as much attention to the lyrics. Even if we did, we were too young and immature to know the meaning. Now that we are in our 60's and 70's, we have the KZbin videos and lyrics sites on the Internet. The artists of those years, The Bee Gees, Moody Blues, Beatles, etc. were only 3 to 8 years older than us. Their songs showed a LOT of wisdom for such young musicians. I am happy to hear that you are sharing the music of our generation with younger generations, I do the same thing. 🎵💖 God bless you too, Ms. Lee! 🙏🙏🙏

This just rips my heart out! Watching these two brothers playing together when they were so young, knowing how the years would sometimes separate them, is so very sad. If you really want to cry, though, watch this, then follow it up with Robin's song, "Days of Wine and Roses." It you're not in tears by the time you're done watching, then you don't have a heart. And don't even get me talking about "Alone" where Barry sings the line "and I don't wanna be alone," and it shows him at the end, alone in front of the microphone in the studio. Oh my precious Barry, hold on and be strong! And my dear Mo, Robin, and Andy, I miss you so!

Their incredible songwriting and live performances of 50+ years takes me away, at least for awhile, from the sad happenings in the world now. Oh so sadly beautiful... I can't stop the tears, not that I want too.. this emotional song stabs me in the heart. I'll put this song up against anything the Beatles ever wrote. words aren't enough to explain the effect this song has on me

Beautiful song, but I would not compare Bee Gees with The Beatles, which in my opinion is still the biggest band of all time, moreover, they had different styles, each with its merits such as Led Zeppelin, The Platters or Any Other Talented artist. I love this song!
@stephenhosking73847 жыл бұрын
@Aloysius, I understand you not wanting to compare this with the Beatles, but I will. Yes, it reminds us of the Beatles from the same period: Eleanor Rigby, Norwegian Wood. I don't know why, but if I had only one to take, it would be First of May.

@musicluver19584 жыл бұрын
Its about when they were little, so christmas trees were much taller than them and now look small and then .. It was written by Barry but not about his first love, as many people believe. But about their first dog, which arrived on the first of May. A beautiful song, wonderfully written, to be interpreted as if it were about young love, or even brothers or sisters. But mainly about childhood memories and their beloved pet.
@ricardocalfin30374 жыл бұрын
This identifies many of us, because I think it is there, in our childhood / adolescence, where our best memories are ... Your comment is very true, I had read it once.

musicluver1958 - As if this song wasn't nostalgic and sad enough, you tell me it's about a dog. Now I love it even more.
@AlamoDame72 жыл бұрын
Just saying-- Barry didn't say it was about his dog. He said his dog Barnaby came to him on the first of May, so Barry (also backed by Maurice later) used the "First of May" as a good TITLE for a song he was then writing. The lyrics themselves weren't referring to Barnaby.
