You really should watch the 1967 video:) Barry was 20, and the twins 17. The story goes that Robert Stigwood asked for one more song to complete their first album. Because they liked to write songs in a location with an echo, they went into a stairwell. It’s also been told that the lights were out. Sitting in the dark, they imagined that it must be what it would feel like to be trapped in a mine.... then out came the song. It was released as their first single, but went out in a white wrapper as part of Stigwood’s marketing plan. Everyone thought the Beatles had gotten back together. And then the Bee Gees appeared on the BBC as you can see in the video - NOT the Beatles. Also, they believed that including the name of a specific location would help songs sell, so to help sell in the US (which had the largest record market) they chose NY to be the location for their imagined 1941 mining disaster. There is humor behind much of their music, but they deliver it in sincere, dramatic fashion... like actors. It’s just pure entertainment from 3 very creative brothers!! Thanks for the reaction.

It wasn't a coincidence they chose to write about a mining disaster. It was less than a year on from the awful Aberfan disaster in Wales and the brothers wrote the song, in part, to deal with their feelings about that (Hence the name Jones, the reference to the landslide and the straining of the ear for a sound). There was no such event in New York in 1941 but they were being discrete because it was so recent and painful.

They wrote it in a dark stairwell at a studio that actually HAD a power outage. They were sitting in the stairwell, loved the echo there and came up with the concept, sound and lyrics while there.

They were on a break in a studio and went into a stairwell, they liked the echo for their voices. I think the lights all went out, as they were sitting in the dark the idea of being trapped in a mine came to them, hence this song came about.

Chad is I told you few vids before I was 15 years in 1968 when I visited my first life concert in Cologne as a young fan of the Bee Gees with their first relased no. 1 singles in Germany Massachusetts and Words just month before. Now 55 years later, I never forget the opening. Total darkness in the concert hall and the start of the concert with the New York Mining Desaster.

An excellent composition from the imaginations of three young men, writing of a miner facing his own mortality while trapped in the total darkness & silence of a coal mine cave-in...you notice it's a one-sided conversation & Mr. Jones never responds.

I’m their documentaries they talk about composing this song when sitting in stairwell next to an old elevator shaft and the power went out. Lyrics kind of odd but good song. Just shows how the could write about and sing anything.

Fun fact: the idea for this song came when they were taking a break in a stairwell in the recording studio on a recording night. The electricity suddenly went out and they were in sitting there in a pitch black space. So one of them said "This is what it must feel like when you're in a collapsed mine" (or something in that line), also because of the reverberation in the stairwell. They began to hum and came up with the dramatic and haunting first sounds of this song. The title and the subject though are totally made up. I believe in America the song is also known by "Have you seen my wife, mr. Jones?", but I'm not 100% sure about that.

The Bee Gees "One Night Only" concert (11-14-97) was, in this long-time fan's opinion, THE BEST. They excelled vocally every song - I was one of the fortunate individuals who attended. Most memorable segment? Robin Gibb singing "I Started a Joke" - he received a well-deserved standing ovation. PLEASE listen to "I Can't See Nobody"...makes me shiver hearing his voice sing and the added harmonies. Best version? 1974 Melbourne, Australia concert video (not the 60's single). Incredible. "I Can't See Nobody" is one of the hidden GEMS from the Brothers Gibb massive song catalog. "New York Mining Disaster" - That song was a sample in the late 1960's how talented the Bee Gees were - just a tease of the great hits ahead in the 70's and beyond.

Barry said it the Aberfan mining disaster in Wales that inspired the song but they just changed the details as they didn't want to hurt the families involved. Worth googling as it was a tragic event with children dying as well.

Hi Chad, when I Googled, "bee gees new york mining disaster 1941 meaning", I found this piece of text: "The song recounts the story of a miner trapped in a cave-in. He is sharing a photo of his wife with a colleague ("Mr. Jones") while they hopelessly wait to be rescued. According to the liner notes for their box-set Tales from the Brothers Gibb (1990), this song was inspired by the 1966 Aberfan mining disaster in Wales."

i watched the story of this song, the bee gees said it was about a coal mine cave in --in wales in the 1960,s,but they thought by changing the scene to ny in 1941 it would bring more attention to the song--but it never happened at all in ny-but great song after all

They didn't write it in 41, that was before they were born, lol. They based it on a mining disaster, with a mine collapse and men hoping to get out alive. One miner talking to another miner who were trapped together. They wrote it during a power outage.

They leave you to build up your own story, like they do in many other songs. The story behind is, they were in an elevator, that stopped at once and it's gettin' dark, 'cause also, the lights went out. And like so many times in their career, a vision was born. This song is so easy constructed, but so dramatically in lyrics that you have no chance to escape. So it happened to me, when as a 13 year old boy, I saw and heard them first on German TV in 1967. They really got me and awoke my interest in music till nowadays. And so I learned playing guitar and singing together with friends. Is'nt that wonderful?

Quintessential Gibb brothers lyrics from the 60's - very dark, broody and full of despair. This was the song that everyone thought was The Beatles new song as the single was released to radio stations with only the name of the song and not the artist's name.

This song is the one G’s sung to Bob Stigwood when they get their first record contract in 🇬🇧 There was no mining disaster in New York in 1941, although there was one in McIntire, Pennsylvania, which killed six people. The song, though, was vaguely inspired by the Aberfan tragedy in South Wales.

This was an actual event in history. Being from coal mining country of Pennsylvania and have seen actual coal mining disaster at the age of 7. The lyrics tell of those underground and hoping for being saved thus not talking too loud in the event of a further collapse of the mine. Also the lack of hope that no one is continuing to rescue or if they have been left for dead. The inference to have you see my wife or do you know what it's like on the outside are basically thoughts the trapped may be going through in face of potential death. I'm 68 and I grew up with the Bee Gees and I have their first on vinyl. My favorite is Robin. He was the heart and soul of the group. Unfortunately if you don't seek his solos you will never get what he brought to the Bee Gees. If you want to hear a real beautiful song by him just listen to Ellan Vannin.

Their manager asked them to write one more song for an album they were recording so they went to the basement of the studio and sat in the dark with the echo of the elevator shaft and it made them think what it would be like to be trapped in a mine and wrote this in 15 minutes, lol!

No mining disaster in NY, it was written in a stairwell when the lights went out. They were very young when they wrote this song, they have said numerous times in interviews they are "storytellers" not everything is about them but they use there emotions when writing. They say sometimes it's like they pulled the words out of the air. None of them had any formal music education, they laughed in a interview saying they could not even read sheet music. They were a cut above❤

There was no mining disaster in New York in 1941. It was the name they gave the song to sort of captivate the audience. I believe this song was released in the United States in 1967, I might be off on the date a little. This was the song that caught my attention and started my lifelong journey with BG music. I was a BG fan from the very beginning and I liked the group as a whole, later I became very enthralled with Barry. He is such a musical genius much less very good looking and sexy even in 2021 at the age of 74. I love the brothers and I miss Maurice and Robin.

In the later years, especially, Maurice usually wore a hat to hide his baldness. It also made him look pretty cool. I once heard his daughter say that he could do a fedora better than anyone. Oh, and he also frequently wore a long coat on stage. I remember a black leather one that made him look darned sexy.

This is a song about a fictitious disaster. But there were many mining disasters where thousands of men and boys died in the U.S. As an aside, this song was the first Bee Gee's single I owned. I then bought (actually, my parents did) eight more of their singles in 1967 and 1968. This is still my favorite era of their songs.

It was written in London at Polydor in a stairwell by a lift shaft in the dark. They started thinking about being trapped underground. In 1966 there had been a landslide mining disaster in Aberfan, Wales, UK. Most of the dead were Children and teachers at a junior school (Kindergarten) though some houses on the slope the huge slag heap descended were also flattened. They were unable to write directly about that and the song was to be released in the USA so the name was tagged New York Mining Disaster 1941. There was no disaster in 1941 but they found out later that New York State had a Mining Disaster in 1939. I hope this helps.

Actually, yes - several. He eventually had surgery. You can see him on crutches in Maurice's wedding pictures with Yvonne. He had surgery the same time his daughter ended up being born very prematurely and they were both in the hospital at the same time - poor Linda!! In fact, Maurice had back surgery before Barry did.
