One more thing... There is a story that the Chicago guys were used to having music well rehearsed before a studio session. When they agreed to do Tragedy, there were no written parts for them. One of their producers talked to Karl Richardson and he said don't worry that's they way Barry works. So they show up and Barry sings them what he wants them to do and plunks out the voicings on the piano, so a transcriber can write their parts. They are still a bit skeptical, but when they go to lay down the horn tracks, the parts are perfect and it was done in half an hour. This is the perfection and the power of our Barry.

I have loved this song for 42 years. When it was first released you couldn't get away from it. It was huuuge. The boycotting of the Bee Gees was AFTER this song, and maybe because of it. It was such a major hit and got so much airplay, following several years of constant Bee Gees hits and airplay. I guess some people had just had it and were tired of constant Bee Gees domination. But they obviously rose to the top and stayed on top for so long for a reason.

I saw a clip of the making of this recording. They were searching for some sound to simulate an explosion, so Barry put his hands up next to his mouth to simulate that. Just one of the smart moves these guys did that makes them my favorite band. People talk about the Beatles, and they were good and I liked some of their stuff - but I loved everything the Bee Gees ever did. Their sound was phenomenal and I am speaking from the position of a classically trained singer.

Loved your reaction! It was this album, the Saturday Night Fever album and their contribution to Andy's career that made them dominating the charts for months in '79. In the end the broadcasting industry gave the brothers the cold shoulder because of the oversaturation, though Andy did however manage to dodge the worst part of the backlash because he wasn't a Bee Gee and he had a different sound, even though Barry, Robin and Maurice helped him with writing and producing. The first album after SNF went completely unnoticed by the music industry. It would take another 7 years before they had a hitsingle again performed by themselves. In the meantime they wrote and produced a load of hits for other artists like Dionne Warwick, Diana Ross, Barbra Streisand, Jimmy Ruffin and many more. An extraordinary career, to say the least 😉

Another great song and reaction from you for our marathon, Chad! This song was recorded for the "Spirits" album and released before the disco backlash started in the middle of 1979 while they were on their "Spirits" tour. The one thing that comes to mind when I see this part of their career covered in a documentary is that they were performing to huge crowds of fans who simply adored them (making a lot of well deserved money) while really stupid people gave up their now priceless "Fever" albums to a really stupid disc jockey so he could blow them to smithereens! And the winners were for this particular battle? Well, that would be our precious Bee Gees, of course! Now the disco backlash war that continued into the early 80's is another story for another time. Can't wait for your fourth reaction later today!

This was probably around the time some folks were just starting to backlash. They were still very, VERY popular, but the resentment against them was starting around this time. I think it was around the fall of 1979, after they had such a huge, HUGE summer 1979 with this album and the tour, that radio stations started holding "Disco destruction" and "Bee Gees destruction" events. Before a big stadium rock and roll concert, the local radio station that sponsored it would bring out this huge, bonfire kind of display, full of disco and Bee Gees records, and then they'd make a big deal of blowing it up. But looks like the Bee Gees got the last laugh, as here they are, 40+ years later and people are still loving their music. I saw their Spirits Having Flown tour in 1979, and they opened with this song. The lights went out, the crowd started screaming, the footlights gave just a tiny bit of illumination on the state as the band came out. My friend and I were frantic, "where are they, where are they, is that them?" we screamed at each other. Then the lights came up and the band charged into this song, The boys were still nowhere to be seen. Then the part just before the verse, the cellos and bass, "bah-da, buh-bah-da, buh-ba-da" kept repeating. Finally the people behind the stage went wild and I could see a spotlight following someone coming around the front. Then I saw a silver-lame adorned arm waving to the crowd. It was Barry. Robin and Maurice followed and took their places behind their microphones, and my cheers and screams turned into tears of pure joy, amazement, and awe at what I was seeing and hearing. It was the only time I ever actually cried tears at a concert

Chad, now you're Bee Gees-journey has arrived their biggest banger. Kinda mindblowing song. But let's talk about a problem, resulting out of falsetto. It's a fifty/fifty thing, lovin' or hatin' it. Just like Robins natural voice. So Barry and Robin, which are to me such phantastic singers with unbeatable abilities, split musiclisteners in a way, no other well known artist has ever done. And music-critizens fired thus explanations so they wrote about Barry: The guy with his huevos over the shoulders, and about Robin: nasal voice like a crying, shivering baby. Hey, where does that come from? And also, it was in, joking about them. My statement is and I first write it in my special, bavarian-languege (german-slang) and will second translate it: "Wos juckts de Oacha, wennse d'Wuidsau an Osch dro reibd" = Why should an oak be afected, if a wild sow rubs his ass on it.
@giannafrancis51763 жыл бұрын
I agree with you that Barry and Robin’s voices are/were inimitable. I’m thankful for both of them. I love your saying (so true!) and wish I could hear it in your Bavarian language. Brings back sweet memories of my dad with his sayings (especially when he was angry, lol) in his family’s native language/dialect - which always sounded better to me than if he translated his thoughts.

@@giannafrancis5176 Oh, so much comforting me, thanks and yes, Baz, Rob and not to forget Mo and Andy reached our hearts and souls. Just stars in heaven and Barry still shining here. About slangs in Germany, which are many, like in other countries worldwide. Ten years ago, the biggest german newspaper made a survey, asking what's the most melodic and what's the sexiest slang of german speaking states. In both categories, Bavarian won that poll. So maybe, you're able to imagine my sayings. But when I'm angry, I'm always trying to say nothing at all untill anger's gone. So let's carry on, Gianna and big hugs!

Peter Stümpfl Yes, I love all 4 Gibb brothers and each man’s significant and unique contributions. Still making my world a better place. You’re wise in your response about taking your time to respond when very angry, I think. My dad always said phrases like “Do what your mother said!” or “Hurry up.
