This was when the Bee Gees were a five piece band. Colin Petersen (drums) and Vince Maloney (guitar) were friends of the Bee Gees during the time they lived in Australia. Robin Gibb primarily played a variety of keyboards, notably piano, organ and Mellotron on the Bee Gees album Odessa (1969); he also played acoustic guitar and organ on his debut solo album Robin's Reign (1970). But he never played live (that I know of) from the early 70s onwards.

It's crazy seeing Barry so young and without his beard and realizing how much Andy is like a little mini Barry. They look like twins that are actually years apart.
@myrthe665 ай бұрын
I once saw a photo of Andy with a beard. I really thought it was Barry at first. In an interview, Barry actually said that for him Andy was his twin brother. Both are also said to have been very similar in character. For example, Barry and Andy were crazy about tennis, which Robin and Maurice were never interested in.

I've known the Bee Gees since the 60s and I was one of the people who thought they sold out during the disco era. I much prefer this song and "Massachusetts", "I've Got To Get A Message To You" and "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart". I've grown to like SOME of their disco hits but this era is still my favorite.

Thank you for your kind reviews of Bee Gees songs. I have been a fan of the Bee Gees since I first heard Words on the radio when I was a kid. That is going on 55 years! My words can hardly express my gratitude for all the beautiful music they gave us over all these years. I am so glad younger people are discovering their music; it is timeless and brilliant. RIP Maurice and Robin as well as young Andy. God bless Sir Barry Gibb.

@HarriBest Reactions --- Harri, Colin Peterson, the drummer, and Vince Melouney, the lead guitarist, were in fact officially part of the Bee Gees, from 1967 through 1969. Both were mates from Australia who were summoned early on in 1967 after the Brothers had arrived back in England and Robert Stigwood had signed them. Both Peterson and Melouney are pictured on the Gibbs' first albums, "Bee Gees' 1st," "Horizontal," and "Idea." The two musicians were also part of the Gibbs' fourth album, the massive "concept" LP, "Odessa," but were not pictured, as the album contained no photographs of the group, but simply a luxurious gatefold red velvet cover. But one can clearly hear both Colin Peterson's drumming and Vince Melouney's guitar playing on that album. Peterson left the group in 1969. Vince Melouney left the Bee Gees after his final concert with them on December 1, 1969. You had asked if the Bee Gees recorded every song that they wrote... Well, the answer would technically be "No," but even most songs which they wrote and never officially released as recordings were recorded by them at least as demos, as that was their preferred method of songwriting, rather than, say, jotting down sheet music, as they were not proficient at reading and writing musical notation. But even their elaborate and glorious string and horn arrangements, which were written early on by their Musical Director, the great Bill Shepherd, were often generated by ideas in the form of humming and strumming, by Barry, Robin and Maurice themselves. This was a practice they continued pretty much to the end. As to the obverse question, "Did the Bee Gees' only record their own compositions?" the answer would be "primarily." Early on in Australia, when they were first testing their songwriting wings, they also did record a number of compositions written by others. And once, early in their international career, they recorded a song written by their lead guitarist, Vince Melouney, called "Such a Shame." It appeared on the U.K. version of the album, "Idea," but was replaced with "I've Gotta Get a Message to You," on the American release. Later on the Gibbs were involved in movies and other projects (notably the "Sgt. Pepper" movie), where they recorded some Beatles songs, and they also in 1995 recorded the Shirelles' 1964 hit "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow," written by Carole King and Gerry Goffin.

No! Take a look at their Aussie-times from 1960 up to 1966, with 'Spicks And Specks' at the end, going to Nr. 1 in Australia. 'New York Mining Desaster 1941', (leadvocals together with Robin), 'To Love Somebody', 'World' (again leads together with Rob) and on many tracks, to hear on the albums, so these were only the singles. The sharing of leadvocals between Barry and Robin is so great. Makes them unbeatable, so Maurice always came in with tremendous feeling for a perfect three-part-harmony.

I remember the evening He discovered I could Sing. Another one of My Friends from back then and I were spending the night with His Daughter at Their home. We were going to a party across the street. I was ready early so I decided to hang out with Her Parents. He got out His Guitar and started singing "Massachusetts" and I started Harmonising with Him. He was sorry to see Me go that evening.

There is an affectation in both Barry and Robin's voices that I can not get enough of. It is on display in this magical song. So, at times, their voices sound like they are in an echo chamber or a "reverb effect". It is natural to their voices and not a tech made thing. You should hear the rendition from Tracy Huang, the Taiwanese singer who is still singing now. When my father fetched me to school with the song played in the radio casette player, the car passed through a backyard field of the school, it filled me with such tangible sadness. That era was filled with spirituality like Cat Stevens, Nana Mouskiori, a budding Olivia Newton John all oozing their way towards praising the high spirituality of that time. And Tracy Huang, Fraces Yip, Sharifah Aini all the East Asian and Indonesian English singers also giving their rendition interpretation of these beautiful ballads in the late 60s to the mid 70s. It was a period before The Lion King and The Boyzone for sure.

Colleen Peterson-drums, Vince Melone -guitar; they were part of the 60’s Bee Gees (they were a couple of their Aussie friends). Colleen was fired and replaced and eventually Vince wanted to do other things snd he left. Later in the 70’s Alan Kendall-guitar ( he was with them up through the 2000’s) Barry joked that he has been a Bee Gee longer then all the brothers! Blu Weaver on Keyboards and synth., I forget the drummers name off the top of my head. But once they landed back in Britton they wanted to have a band and had one since.

Collin Peterson, drummer in the sixties, followed by Geoff Bridgford in the early seventies and then Dennis Bryon, from 1973 up to 1979. In 1975, Dennis, who played formerly in a band, called Amen Corner, involved his bandmate from that time, Blue Weaver, who's been arround then with Mott The Hoople, to talk with the Gibb-bros. And he did, they met on the Isle Of Man and Blue, who came in with no ambitions to be member of the Bee Gees band, so he saw himself more as a Rock'n Roller, was fascinated from the familiar atmosphere he's been included at once. The rest is musical history.

Six careers, to talk about. 1. Aussie period, with great songs like 'Spicks And Specks' and 'In The Morning', to mention the well knowns. 2. 1967-1970, swinging London, where they climbed up to the TOP OF THE POP. Four incredible good albums and many hit-singles. 3. The early seventies with Nr. 1 singles 'Lonely Days' and 'How Can You Mend A Broken Heart', which made them rise up in the US. Hits were also 'Run To Me' and 'My World'. 4. The crazy disco-era from the midseventies up to 1979. Here they reached the stars, were Nr. 1 on every corner of the earth. Robin once said, what we want is a constant, kinda normal success. But things went extraordinary out of control. To much hype at all led to the backlash. 5. Top notch songwriters. Blocked from the radiostations, they wrote massive hits for other artists, serving them their biggest selling albums ever. Barbra Streisand, Kenny Rogers, Dionne Warwick and Diana Ross. 6. 1987 up to 2001, again together as Bee Gees. Crazyness and hype was abused and from now on it's been like Robin once said. A constant, normal flow and still recording hits like 'You Win Again', 'One', 'Paying The Price Of Love', 'For Whom The Bell Tolls', 'Ordinary People', 'Alone' or 'This Is Where I Came In'. I'll tell'ya, not any other band or solo-singer, can compare with the bros. Gibb! Not to forget, that Barry is still around, having his own career. Got the Americana-award for his album 'Greenfields', which went to Nr. 1 in different charts over the planet. And indeed, Robin had it's own solocareer in 1970, with songs like 'Saved By The Bell' or 'One Million Years'. Again in 1985 with 'Juliet', Nr. 1 song in some countries of Europe. HarriBest, your reactions are very sincere, so thanxalot and sorry for writing so much.
