I’ve been distracted this week. I was supposed to start on the diesel yard… however the tunnel entrance to the incline down to the lower level has got the better of me. I have loads of really great feedback in that area and also some constructive ideas and thoughts - so much so that I just needed to look at it.
I’m not sure what I’ve done is the answer - only time will tell. I’m going away over Christmas and New Year so I’ll have plenty of reflection time….
Please do let me have your thoughts on the tunnel entrance area. Nothing is set in stone yet….!

I'm thinking rock for the cutting

Yes, good thought - I’ve just watched a couple of videos where they have used rock facing. It does look effective 👍

Looking great it reminds me of Olive Mount Cutting, with the tunnel cut into side of cutting on the branch that going down to Liverpool Docks.

The only way you could make the area realistic is to make a tunnel entrance at the end of the straight section (below camera) over all 3 lines then have the double track emerge near your tunnel portal. That would give the impression of a single line going elsewhere as it appears to go straight on and it would give you a natural profile for the hill between the lower lines and the upper lines.

Hi. I had a similar thought! Just filmed a quick update explaining how I wish I’d done the area differently…. Maybe something for the future 👍

It could be like Hadden Hall tunnel, where the line was built into a tunnel as the wealthy landowner did not want to see a railway vrossing his land.

Yeah, good point. I remember watching a YT video about that ‘man made’ tunnel 👍

Hi Andy, voice of doom here again 😮. You really know your stuff and you do a fantastic job but I question the need for a tunnel as there seems no difference between the new hillside with the cutting and the old hillside with the tunnel. Why would they go to the expense of a tunnel when a cutting would do? Rule one applies of course, it's your layout 😊 Brian

Hi Brian. Couple of things…. Your not a voice of doom, and I certainly do not know my stuff!! 😃. Seriously though, it’s just one of those areas I don’t think I’ll ever get right. All stems back to the track laying. The incline is far too close to the outer edge of the board making it difficult to get a decent cutting effect. Other than extending the board out meaning no access down that side to the windows I’ll just make do…. Although I have had a couple of thoughts on it. Hindsight eh! Take care, Andy 👍

Nice addition to the landscape. Brings some variation aswell. The moment you said 'I like to change this corner' I thought: TREES! 😄

Hi Andy. Another enjoyable video watching your layout develop. I agree with the addition of trees on the new hill, but over the tunnel area, I would leave that as it is because of the walling creating fields leading into the back scene

I got the first banking and it looks really good but the smaller one between the lines dominants the layout, you can’t see almost any of the tunnel portal, could you have not achieved same with some well positioned trees, bushes? Consider making some embankments chalky, like the railway engineers following the lay of the land to an extent like in Wolds in Yorkshire or the Downs below London you get some really steep natural forming hillsides which branch lines weaved through.

Hi Andy. Brilliant job buddy. Looks like great stuff to cut, I call it Semtex, never remember it's name, doesn't explode though.😂 Did use polystyrene horrible stuff to cut. Hey copydex love it could get high on the smell, such a forgiving glue. Thanks for sharing buddy. Stay safe. DELPH JUNCTION (Pete)

Hi Pete, I struggle to work with polystyrene as well. I do enjoy ‘carving’ the insulation board (thankfully it’s not the wife’s best carving knife!). Take care, Andy

Looking great. Is the area going to be heavily wooded or manicured? Maybe add a natural spring trickling down to the side of the tracks and making a small pool of water.

Genuine question, is paper as good as plaster cloth, asking because i am about to start modelling my own railway….
@Grandadstrainroom-pn3tt
@Grandadstrainroom-pn3tt 5 ай бұрын
Hi. I’ve used both in the layout. Paper is definitely quicker and cheaper but not quite as strong as plaster bandage. I do prefer paper but if the layout was portable then I would use plaster bandage for added strength 👍
