I replaced a bathroom light fixture exactly like this one out in the Midwest. And it too had a wire coming out the wall like that...shouldn't the wire be in an electrical box in the wall?

Only around the gnome door. They get a little fussy if you paint more than that. You may have to do more depending on how big the hole was and the fading of the old paint.

There should be a junction box for every light fixture, even the vanity he just changed out. I'm not sure why the last guy who installed the old fixture never bothered to cut in one

yes, it's required. it could have been an older home, or building code was not properly enforced, or it was non-permit work (hack job)

Awesome video and ideas. Beside the cabinet repaint which looks great the other things don't look so much like an upgrade but more like a change of style. We get tired to see what we have and changing it suddently looks better even if it's not (but not worse). The black light faucets are not better neither are the black light fixture. IMO

There should be a junction box cut in for the light instead of leaving exposed wires sticking straight out of drywall because if those wires were to spark it may start a fire. You can get an old work box which can mount itself on to drywall or use a metal pancake if it's on a stud. Other than that, great tutorial. Love the video

Mounting plate is upside down. He's got the head of the green ground screw against the wall. The mounting screws will screw in from either side.

The problem is you have to fix up the wall before you can install the new fixture. Finding paint that matches your old paint is nearly impossible!
