I started a Face book group for local backyard beekeepers. Already a few have given up after loosing their bees. They invested several hundred on equipment and bees. IMO .. Their first mistake is keeping only 1 hive. We had 3 last winter and ended up with 1 by spring. The first one that we purchased for $200. plus one from a swarm we captured. This winter we started with 6 and have 3 this spring. Loss happens, Count on it! Every hive has their own "personality" . Some are weak and die (survival of the fittest) And some just don't like our yard and find someplace else to go. No big deal when we get our bees for free. We catch swarms and do easy cut outs, like the one we got in the spring of 2017 . We had never done it before nor had been shown. We just learned from what we watched on You tube. And now that is still our most successful hive! It has survived 2 winters! Not bad for newbies if I can say so myself! Lol

Michigan beek here. Had one hive survive winter. Numbers seem to have decreased. Upon inspection today, about 2 pounds of bees in it. They were not defensive. Brood box was dry, no eggs. Second medium super had about 10 capped drone cells. Lots of capped honey, nectar and pollen also but did not see a queen. This hive is also not very active in the day like the others. Any advice???

Hi, Due to unforseen circumstance, I have been unable to tend my hive (one) in over a year. Went out today and tried to inspect it. They seem to be fine, but the frames are stuck fast. I mean to tell you they seem impossible to remove. Two deeps, and a shallow on top. Lots of bees. What can I do? New Mexico.
@WallsBeeMan5 жыл бұрын
Your best bet is to get one of the outside frames out first. It would be nice if you had a frame grip. Smoke the bees away from one of the outside frames the best you can. Run a long knife or hive tool between the frames and the side wall of the box. Do the same between the outside frame and the next frame. Just pry little be little and pull and eventually you will get it out. Keep us posted.......tim

@@WallsBeeMan Thank you Mr. Tim. I went out after work today, and did what you have said. Got one frame out .. eventually. But I've got myself a real mess. The last time I was in there I set up a 9 frame spacer in both deep supers. They didn't quite fit, so I modified them. I think the space is wrong! They are out of control with their comb construction. You know what I mean? The comb is not organized, and the frames are just theoretical. Lol! The shallow on top has 10 frames, and I can manage this one, but the deeps are just ... well, a mess. I don't know if I can straighten this out, without destroying the hive. In other words, I am afraid I will do more harm than good. At any rate, this is a bigger job than I thought, and will have to wait till the weekend. Has this ever happened to you? Should I move the whole magilla to a new hive? Maybe I should just leave the bottom to the bees, and manage the top? I really appreciate your time, and experience. Sam

Hi Tim. I did my first hive inspection today. I'm running 2 deeps on both Hives, one was doing great. At least 4 frames of eggs, brood and larva. The other hive doesn't have any eggs, brood and larva in the top or bottom box. So I looked for the queen and couldn't find her, but before I closed the hive up before winter time she was in there and I had 3 frames of brood. I got this queen from a secondary bee handler. Is it possible that it was a old queen and she just died during the winter??
@WallsBeeMan5 жыл бұрын
I hate to guess. Take a frame of eggs out of your strong hive and put in this hive of question and see if the make one or more queens. If you strong hive is good then you can take say 2 frame of capped brood and put in the other hive as well......keep us posted.....tim

Do wear protection then as time goes one, you may feel comfortable maybe just wearing a veil. when I go to a bee yard, I can soon now if they are in a good mood or not. Sometimes & wear just a veil. Good video Tim. I've been keeping bees over here in N.E. Texas for nearly 40 years. Another trick for laying workers is to give the laying worker hive a frame of eggs and young larva a week, and usually after about 3 weeks they will start making queen cells, and raise a new queen. Also sometimes a new queen will lay more than one egg in a cell for a few days when she first starts laying.

@@WallsBeeMan Well. Last fall , our "good hive" had nearly 2 deeps full of honey. We left it in there for them to eat through winter and it is all almost gone now but we didn't need to feed them all winter. They are building it back up with fresh honey now though... They had about 1 deep of honey last spring but we only robbed 2 frames. With all the rain we have been getting we are anticipating getting a lot more honey and able to leave plenty for them as well. Our "good hive" has 4 deeps but they are only using 3. The brood seems to be in the 2 n'd one up. We didn't pull frames from the middle because it was windy. We originally got that colony from a cut out we did in the fall of 2017! .. Only 1 month after starting beekeeping! We did our first inspection Feb 28th. I just uploaded that video last night. I plan to tag the cut out video today, to it to show where our good hive came from. Our other two are smaller. We live near Kingman Arizona. About 2 hours south of Las Vegas Nevada. I have a joke for you to share, I was going to send it on messenger on Facebook but couldn't find your Facebook page. Did you close it? ~ JoAnn
