Jeff, i've always suspected the washboarding was more of a cleaning behaviour. i think when the population of the hive gets a little crowded, the nurse bees spill out on the front of the hive and continue their cleaning. and i think you have proven that since you could see that same cleaning behaviour was being going on inside too. in addition to all of the fanning. very cool!
