It was a very good idea to have your better half taking charge of the camera ! She did a great job of filming you while you took care of the bee's ! I think that you should have her do the filming from now on ! Plus she didn't get stung once !

i work for a honey operation with 8500 ish hives and I'm in hives all week with those gloves and they rock. and yes they can still sting through them. it just significantly cuts down on the number of stings you get a day.

I use the same gloves and I can tell you that they do sting through them but what I have found is that the stinger pops right back out so the stings are pretty mild and you don't have to worry about getting the stinger out because the gloves pop them right back out.

Just an idea - because I have aggressive hives Use a fume board to drive the bees down ... remove the super and close the hive - you can then go through each super with less harassment from the bees And great job camera women

I use 14 mil long cuff nitrile lab gloves and they are great! Dexterity, feel close to bare hand, are not cumbersome and I have been stung in the glove where the bee was stuck in the glove, stretched the nitrile material and she was able to fly away without losing her stinger! I like them alot.

Nice. I'm liking these that I purchased as well. A longer cuff would be nice.

Bees can sting you thru both nitrile and leather gloves. Sometimes on leather you get indirectly stung because the gloves get full of stingers. If you never get stung you're not trying hard enough. ;)
@daddykirbs7 жыл бұрын
Haha yeah I guess I try pretty good then. I don't get stung every visit to the apiary, but often enough :)

Very pretty boxes you have there. Someone has too much time on their hands. Don't be in too big a hurry to get nucs into full width boxes, I found it best just to build up a second small box until they are well established then switch frames from the two into full box width. Good video, wish I had had some help like you have.

Great camera work. Answer to your question on my part: yes, bees can sting through the type of nitrile gloves you are using. Have been using the thick nitrile gloves that are lined and have not been stung. This year, tried using the thin ones and got stung one time. Most of the time they are not interested in those gloves at all. The sting was on the back of the hand so could not have mashed her. Anyway, love your videos.
@Sqeptick7 жыл бұрын
Glad the gloves worked out! I do want to clarify a couple things...I do think bees can sting through them, but for whatever reason they don't seem to try. Also, I only use the natural colored nitrile gloves, so I can't vouch for those blue ones; but other beekeepers (including you now) seem to use them successfully. BTW, nice honey haul.
@daddykirbs7 жыл бұрын
I'm going to order some of the nude colored gloves :)

I wonder...does the aggression level of the bees correlate at all with the time of day and/or the outside temp when you open their hive? Are they less likely to expend energy defending the hive if it's killer hot out, for example?
@daddykirbs7 жыл бұрын
Perhaps. I wish I knew exactly why and when they would be defensive / aggressive.

I don't like the regular gloves and used nitrile maybe a dozen times. never had an issue with nitrile, and liked that I could feel through them better. couldn't feel the bees crawling on me which is why I never bare handed my hives
@daddykirbs7 жыл бұрын
I'll get some of the neutral colored nitrile gloves to see how I like those.
@GoldenLegionHoney7 жыл бұрын
I'm also a keeper that makes lots of vids. I've tried the nitrile alone and got hit through them on a hit hive (africanized) and when I accidentally pinched one against the frame. They don't like to walk on the nitrile so I put it over my leather gloves. Works well just hot here in North texas.
@daddykirbs7 жыл бұрын
have you every doubled up on the nitrile to see if that helps?
@GoldenLegionHoney7 жыл бұрын
they've even stung through nitrile over leather. they just don't like to land or be on the nitrile in my observations. if they are angry they will shove their stinger WAY in lol.

The nitrile gloves brought me to this video. i have always wondered if they would be enough cause Ive had aggressive bees cover my leather gloves with stingers down by the border in douglas arizona and some of those stingers went through the leather gloves.
@daddykirbs6 жыл бұрын
My current Nitril gloves are 6 mil thick I think. They work really well. I can't find my exact order on amazon for these or I'd give you the exact product name. So far I've not had any stingers get into me through the thicker gloves. When I started (probably in this video) I used the 4mil gloves and yes... yes they can easily sting through those.

well done Mrs Kirby. Yes bees can and development sting through nitrile gloves but knowing that will just make you a better beekeeper. Keep on using them and don't go back to the leather gloves. You should not put up with agressive bees she is just passing her genetics on through her drones. make a new queen from your best colony and cull the bad one. Enjoyed the video thanks
