Always fun to hear a fellow beekeeper's opinion on things. If you ask three beekeepers the same question you'll get five different answers and none of them will be wrong.

I suggest getting the book "Building Beehives For Dummies" if you want to build your own hives and inner bits or woodenware. It has different hive types with descriptions of each and build plans with dimensions, measurements, cut lists for lumber and hardware suggestions. Best purchase I made aside from Beekeeping For Dummies which is also another book I suggest as it's informative and a pretty good read while having a pipe (or a good cup of tea) in the easy chair while waiting for coats of paint and/or glue to dry on newly built hive bits.

What's your thoughts on concrete hives.

Would the plastic boxes be more sterile so if you have foul brood ect you don’t have to burn the box, You just disinfect it?

Gday team. Im considdering changing over to the styrofoam units, how have they faired over the couple years you had them? With my timber boxes I put vented base boards in some and they are the hives that really took off and are healthy.

Hi Mark, Some professional help needed please 🙂 I have read conflicting reports of the plastic hives harbouring more moisture/condensation than most of the timber hives, do you find this a problem as I've noticed you do use both types on your property ?? Also do you find the foam hives stand up to the heat better in Australia than the traditional timber hives ? 🐝 🙂

No mention of horizontal hive design. Bit of a gap.

Unfortunately like alot of experienced beekeepers who give advice on hives. They are just victims of their environment as only one of these hives I would recommend for backyard bee-keeping. I've done long lang, lang and Kenyan top bar and I find the top bar most easy and enjoyable
@gavinfry71763 жыл бұрын
@@danielblyth2764 but this series is aimed at beginner beekeepers, in my opinion a top bar and horizontal hive is more suited for intermediate beekeepers. I guess if they included every type of hive then how long will the video go for and then some people would get a information overload, decide it's all to confusing and switch of the idea. And this not even including native stingless hives etc. Again just my opinion. And while top bars and horizontal hives are great for some states, I'm told there not suitable for snow winters.

@@gavinfry7176 the only thing horizontal hives arnt suited to is ease of mass pollination. You can tell in this video he either doesn't know much about top bar hives or just dislikes them. Shouldn't matter how long the video goes for if it means all bases are covered. And I would say top bars and long langstroth hives are easier to work with so definitely for beginner backyard beekeepers. Keep in mind im only a hobbyist and don't gain anything from suggesting these styles over traditional hives.

@@danielblyth2764 You realize in one of his earliest video's he made a horizontal hive from a fridge.

@@gradyrodgers7881 Thats great but this video is aimed at educating new beekeepers on which hive to go for yet in my opinion he has not covered this properly. Ive been told so many times by beekeepers that they wish they new about horizontal hives. It would be great if he covered all basis so people can make an educated choice rather than choosing 1 of many langstroth designs.
