I keep hearing that some people won’t go into a hive to do an inspection because they are too aggressive in the summertime. Don’t people own bee suits ?? I’m in Arizona and have to deal with Africanized honey bees. I don’t have a problem. Trust your bee suit people.

Thanks for another awesome video. Its getting hot here in northwest florida. I built a shallow super with holes to vent off heat above medium supers. At 95 degrees and 80 percent humidity my bees have greatly reduced the bearding. Thanks for all you do to help us newbie beekeepers

I have an ice pack vest to use during the heat here in Florida and it's way cheaper than those other cooling suits. Just saying staying cool keeps me checking my girls!

I'm in the process of making 3 splits just for queen issues. Hopefully I haven't killed what I have and at the same time removing brood and waiting on queens to come online the mites are slowing. With all this hive commotion I'm not checking for mites till 3rd week of the month.

Did check today. Saw queens and tons of brood in my second year top bar hives. I cut out most of drone brood. Saw honey and pollen stores on top of larva. Added more bars. Only thing Is I thought I would see more bars with just honey. I saw 2 at beginning of hive by entrance and a couple t other end not fully capped yet. Im in Wisconsin. Am I looking at fall harvest?

Love you videos David. Great information. I have a question about mite treatments. If I take honey frames in July and I think the hives need mite treatments, should I treat the hive before I put the wet frames back or should I have them finish the nectar flow and then treat at that time? Thanks Kevin

Thank you so much. I am in Arizona and my husband made some solar fans for our hives to help cool down the hives. Our temps exceed 111 degrees here. We also have a wishing well water feature that the bees are hanging out at All day.

I always place my hives where they get morning sun but semi-shaded in the afternoon. The series of flowers throughout the spring - summer, blackthorn, borage, elderflower, fuschia, globe artichoke, etc - ivy is the last, keeps them fat & happy and after a heatwave we now are looking at weeks of periodical rain, which is ok. Typical weather extreames. Great tip on the mites. So obvious this is their breding time. As a new keeper I might harvest the supers, (I never take everything), and then pop in some Apiguard paste, one per hive, it seems to work over the last two years for my agressive hatd working little black bees. Later I introduce some sugar paties/surup, which they rarely finish by next spring. Love & hugs to you and yours. Tipperary Mtns ☘ 💖🙏💫

My NUC startups I rehived into a 10 frame deep and then added another hive body in early June has swarmed .. I checked and all the frames are drawn out but not full.. So I added honey supers to what was left.. The hive that swarmed still seemed to have plenty of bees .. I didn't check for a queen though..

Did you lose any colonies during the storms/derecho? I’m in Springfield, IL and 1st thing check when it was safe to come up from the basement was the backyard to see how the hives fared. They were perfectly fine thank goodness.

I heard that having enough room at the bottom of your er hives for a “forest floor” complete with moss, leaf litter, and mite eating earwigs is a great way to keep mites in check. I don’t keep bees so I am asking if this is a real thing.
@beek
@beek Жыл бұрын
Yikes! It would become a breeding ground for small hive beetles to pupate and mites live within colony. Only the few that fell off would go down there and climb back up.

Is using green drone comb and breaking the queens cycle sufficient for mite control or do you need to use chemicals?

No, you were losing the hive and the hive beetles were able to take advantage of the weakness. Hive beetles wont kill a strong hive but a dieing hive can be taken over by them

I did an inspection just 20 minutes ago. Queen issues on one hive. You hit the nail on the head. Had a virgin queen two cells destroyed 5 not touched yet. I took unmarked queen out split and left the others do what they will.
