Used to be most beekeepers were farmers supplementing their income. I have a beekeeper friend that was pregnant this Summer and couldn't lift. She paid me to work her bees for the Summer. Making money with bees is like a river. First you have ditches then streams everywhere coming. At some point once enough starts coming in you have a river ! The Mississippi river starts as a trickle !

I was pretty lucky this year. I sold 120 jars of honey this fall. I just hope my bees go through the winter. It’s been cold in Pennsylvania.

I have come to learn that if you are growing your bee business to start with the up front cost is high. I’m going into my second year and the equipment is what can be expensive. I made the mistake of wanting the cool stuff instead of just what I need. My second year I am cutting cost of making different types of honey and some creamed honey to make up some cost. My 3rd year I think I want to start selling queens because I think it would be easier to sell those than nucs.

What's your opinion on drone queen excluders that you put on the front of a hive to keep the bees from being able to swarm
@beek6 сағат бұрын
I like that you called it a drone, queen excluder. Many people fail to remember that drones get trapped too. I've made videos of doing exactly that, placing the excluder between the bottom board and first box to prevent a swarm until I could get in there and control the hive from swarming.
@DarlaCharlton6 сағат бұрын
@beek the one's I'm talking about you stick on the actual outside front of the hive I think there an older thing it's kinda like a little wooden box thing with queen excluder type mesh
@beek5 сағат бұрын
Yes, I made a video last year where I just made my own. Works the same way. Can't leave it on too long, but a week at the most just enough time so you can go in and remove swarm cells etc.

You dont need to spend a lot of money if your thrifty. You dont need to buy fancy equipment and fully automate unless your commercial. Sure once you grow you might need to automate everything.

Is there a food that’s toxic to mites? A food that will attract them and then they get poisoned? There has to be. Chemistry is real.

The only thing I'm concerned about is what to do if there's a failure in any of those plastic parts. As far as the lack of pulling bees out and extracting, I think this method of harvesting the honey is *far* more humane than disrupting the whole hive. To my knowledge the company never advocates for a "set and forget" method of beekeeping. They mention several times in their website that it's not a "zero upkeep" system, it's a system that causes less stress to the bees when harvesting. I DO worry about the negative reviews though, they all say the same thing "difficult and time consuming to put together", "missing parts", "broken parts", "plywood made in China" when it's supposed to be constructed of natural wood in Australia. I'm curious to know your views once you've gotten used to it, because I would LOVE to start beekeeping, but my mobility issues make it very difficult to juggle constant need for suiting up and harvesting the traditional way. This is far more accessible for people with these kinds of issues. I just don't want to save the bees (and myself) a bunch of pain and stress, only to accidentally kill all the bees if it falls apart mid use.
@beek15 сағат бұрын
There were many piece and some people would find it easy to build and others would find it challenging. Nonetheless it is very time consuming to build and paint or varnish. Did have a broken section of wood. Screws strip out easily. No honey for me the first year while my regular langstroths made plenty. Second year, the moisture level of the honey was never low enough to harvest. I have lifted out the flow plastic frames and none have broken. I do fear they might.

Better use your hand to take a bug out, especially a fly! (Just the idea of it being squashed by tools and releasing potentially eggs inside the honey..)

Hey Dave. I did my first inspection today at 71 degrees and when I opened the hive there was a ton of dead bees. Zero bees were alive or flying around. As I was cleaning up the hive hundreds of bees started showing back up. There is a ton of honey in the hive and the bees were dead as if they frozen in time. What could have happened?
