A must watch information video on swarm prevention, look through a hive and find some queen cells, how to stop the colony from swarming, I end up with more colonies from a great queen.
Very good practice, put a frame of drawn comb in the new box of foundation for the queen to lay on straightaway,

Another great video John. I’m a new beekeeper so I’m learning day by day and this was really useful. Look forward to seeing how you split the hive to make the various nukes. All the best. Chris.

Hi John and Lin Another very well presented and easy to understand tutoral. I had to do an artificial swarm myself im now waiting for my new queen to mate. (fingers crossed) I think the next time i will keep more QC's and make some nucs up myself. Also i think that one of my colonies has CBPV im not positive but it looks like the symptoms (Jittery bees on the landing board and a few greasy black bees too 😢). Bee inspector will confirm or not. Do you have any technique to deal with this? Regards.....
@johnbeemansaunders6567
@johnbeemansaunders6567 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike, Thanks for your comment, Sorry to hear you may have in one of your colonies CBPV I do think there is a lot of this about,so well spotted its good you recognised it, the mane thing is, the bees can spread it from hive to hive so any hives close by could be vulnerable,I not sure there is much can be done for this, I would be very interested myself in what the bee inspectors findings are, I would not like to give you the wrong information about this .beekeeping is not always easy, hope all goes well with your colony, John

If only I'd watched your video 3 days ago. I carried out an artificial swarm. All went well until she's swarmed the next day. Using a queen excluder would have seen to this. Fortunately, I manged to get them back and now in a nuc been fed and fed and fed.

Inspected the artificial swarm aftermath today. The original hive is doing well and they've made a good couple of queen cells. The new hive in the original position had also made a couple of queen cells. Took these down. Then on inspecting the nuc with the Queen in, I amazingly couldn't see her but there was a good couple of frames with eggs. So one of these put into the new hive back in the original position. I am a little surprised that it seems my queen has absconded after she'd started to lay in the nuc?

Great vid John i know if you want to Harvest Honey you have to wait to its capped. Do you ever get any early spring honey that is capped or dose that depend on the weather. Or do you have to wait till the end of July.

Hi I have hive stands that are built wide for two hives and I find it best to work them from the back to the front and the bees put all the pollen in the front frame, then the brood. so many diffident ways of beekeeping. John.

Thanks John. Always a pleasure watching your videos. I noticed it looked like you put your super with the queen cells in it, under the brood box in the split. Is there a particular reason you did that?
@johnbeemansaunders6567
@johnbeemansaunders6567 4 жыл бұрын
Well spotted, I should have said, I will mention this on my next video, There were a lot of fat queen cells hanging down from the super, so to protect them from damaging them I would normally pop an eak in the middle of the boxes but did not have one with me, so until i came back with one I placed the box at the bottom where there is more room for the cells ,temporarily , John.

Great video folks, a real wowser of a colony, great genetics definitely worth keeping . Now you'll both have many more for us to learn from. One of my colonies has just come out of re-queening and they were quite grumpy for a day or two. Thankfully now successfully mated and the split I made too with the other queen cells.. Thanks John and Lin always look forward to your videos.

Just a bit of advice with that method it's better to put one drawn-out frame in or 1 frame from the other the original hive for the Queen to lay on or to stay on without doing this I've had them kill the queen because they continuously trying to get her to move up into the super at first and lay eggs up there she can't get up there so they kill her. I enjoy watching your videos you're a lovely man John.

That's great news John hope you didn't worry too much we all worry about our bees it helps if there's a good nectar flow on and there is at the moment because the bees are working maple trees and maple in hedgerows they will fly 3 miles to it that's the yellow pollen coming in. Enjoy your bees and keep safe.

Any tips on finding queen's John? I have found 1 out of my 6 colonys this year I'm just no good at it. Tried no smoke and diving in to the middle of the brood nest.. They'd want to be waving and shouting at me. Third year beekeeper btw..
@beehinde
@beehinde 4 жыл бұрын
Use 2 brood chambers, 1 being an empty one. Divide frames so that they are in pairs across both brood chambers, have a cup of tea or coffee, now around 20 minutes later take the frame pairs out and open like a book, the queen should be in the middle of one of the pairs. They are alternative methods.

The method below of two frames together is super explained and a good method , Three years is still note a long time so im sure your eye for the queen will improve some more, you are not the only one who has trouble finding the queen, I tend to look across the frame angled slightly but in most cases the queen should be where the day old eggs are, regards John.
