My daughter was crying this morning because her favourite shirt is too small for her but she loves the unicorn star design on the front. You've inspired me to cut it out and sew it to another shirt for her! Maybe even the back of a jean jacket?

I don't know if you're looking for any sewing advice, but here's what I would try if it were me: 1. Put in a new needle, making sure it is appropriate for your fabric 2. Rethread the machine 3. Take the bobbin out and put back in again 4. Put some iron-on interfacing behind the fabric patch (sometimes it needs more stiffness or tension to do a satin stitch). 5. If all that fails, play with the tension. Often, the smallest thing can make a huge difference!
@KathrynsRavens

A new machine needle is often the easiest fix! Also, oil if it's been awhile

Super tips, I would also recommend leaving the fabric large enough for an embroidery hoop.
@lifexfashionxbeauty

I was thinking the same. It kinda sounded like the tension wasn’t correct 🧐 sometimes it’s also the combination of a thread and fabric that don’t go together. Practice makes perfect 🥰

Love this! I usually keep a spray bottle with water to spritz my fabric when ironing and once the steam has evaporated the fabric holds it shape much much better and ironing goes so much faster. Could be worth trying next time you're working with small annoying hems!

I've created a fictional name and surname for myself back around 2009, when I joined a discussion board. (Everyone there was using nicks and they knew that this name is just another nick.) Then I realised I prefer the made up name so much more than my own, so I just started introducing myself with it to all new people in my life. Fast forward to today - I have 25(ish) book translations officially signed with that made up name, all my friends call me by it and I very much think of myself as N even though I wasn't born one.

When I was active in the SCA (medieval reenactment), some of my friends would call my parents' house looking for me and ask for me by my SCA name (Beibhinn). My mom took it in stride, my dad sometimes made snarky comments.

Thank you so much for showing the struggles of sewing. I have gone through three older used machines that I would have to fix and trouble shoot so often that I just hated sewing with a machine and would end up doing a lot of hand sewing. Finally I caved and bought myself a new machine and have sewn so much more with a machine that works and isn’t constantly breaking or not working I am better at sewing because of all of the years of having to fight so hard to get anything done.

a tip for small fiddly stitches or embroidery is using a piece of paper under the project. it doesn't have to align to the edges, just for stability so the fabric stays afloat, and the bobbin thread doesn't do that thing...

Fellow Elizabeth here! Parents and childhood friends called me my middle name, Mishel, to avoid confusion with my grandma Elizabeth. But for some reason I chose to switch to Elizabeth when I changed elementary schools. My high school friends started calling me E.K. (last name starts with K). Now I am married and I added the new last name on. So I am now EMKL and write my full name as Elizabeth L but most people either call me E.K. or Mishel. The Elizabeth nickname/initials struggle is real!

I love your thrift flip, upcycle, crafty videos! So, yes, more are always welcome! Also, the painted frame is so adorable. I think the train works so well against the frame because of the muted colors. Maybe try making or using a black and white family photo to allow your frame to pop while also cherishing a cute moment.

Tips on the sewing machine: Try changing the needle if you already didn't. It sounds foolish but sewing machines are somewhat particular about the needles. Also use a good brand like Schmetz. It kind of sounds like your machine needs some oiling and perhaps cleaning. Check the bobbin case for dust and stuff. Also there can be felt like dust on the feed dogs. You can clean that as well. It can make all the difference! It probably should be opened and oiled on the moving parts inside. You can oil it yourself on some spots. If you do, only use sewing machine oil, nothing else. You can take the machine to a professional to do a maintenance. Afterwards it will run smooth like butter 😁

It looks like the bobbin thread was bunching up on the underside of the patch which is sooo annoying. Usually when that happens to me I will rethread everything and then hold both the top and bottom thread a few inches out from behind the foot for the first few stitches. That stops it from getting caught up in the bobbin on my machine, might work for yours too!

If you want to stitch something on a patch again, iron on some interfacing on the back of the patch. Then it isn't to thin and the thread does not keep catching. One layer of fabric is just to thin.

Such cute flips. I have a couple of tips. When sewing the patch its best to put some kind of stabilizer (like interfacing) behind the fabric. Also when sewing something tiny on my machine I use tissue paper to help guide the fabric through. You can gently tear away the paper when you’re done 😀

Tiny scraps make great appliqués and fun patchwork ! And fun patches to mend clothing or to decorate them. It can also make fun accents when you have a very small pattern piece somewhere, like reinforcement pieces. I only throw away (or compost if it’s natural fibers and non-toxic dyes) tiiiiny tiny scraps that I couldn’t sew comfortably. I’m contemplating trying to make paper with the cotton and linen scraps. Just to try.

Sorry one more. I learn things from quilters but I dont quilt! For the diamond patch I dont hem patches or patch pockets. I line them and if a pocket leave a seam open to turn and press .It gets closed while top stitching on. For the patch like the diamond I use thin fabric, lining etc. Cut 2 sew all around and slit the back, Turn, can slip stitch the slit but if it wont show in the project I dont.
