Akala has always been that dude, from way back on his War Mixtapes, all the way through to him recent material. I always enjoy watching reactions to his FITB's, because it's always a delight to see others get to experience, and enjoy his ability for the first time. There are many talented UK artists that frequently surprise American reaction channels; Akala, Mic Righteous, Dave, Lowkey, Ghetts, Kano, Wretch 32 to name a few of my personal favourites. I've seen a few other comments recommending Ocean Wisdom, who I also rate highly (his flow and cadence are insane), but it's worth noting that Wizzy also uses a lot of UK slang and terminology you may struggle to grasp at first listen. Another two favourite of mine are "Swiss - Daily Duppy" and "Jafro - Blackbox". Keep up the good work, authentic reactions like these always draw a crowd. Have a blessed day. Edit: Worth nothing 'Big Narstie - FITB 3', and 'Bugzy Malone - FITB' too.

Racism is heavy here but on a whole black and brown people have only really been in the UK en mass since just after WW2 so a lot of the systemic problems we face were heavily influenced by classism which is basically what Akala lectures about. His sister that he keeps referencing is Ms Dynamite who was a big artist in the UK in the early 2000s her messaging in her early music is pretty similar to her brothers. Akala has 2 honorary doctorates as well trust me he is one of them ones!!
@natrixxirtan2 жыл бұрын
Come off it racism is not heavy in the slightest like you got to eventually it’s classism poor people regardless of colour get the on just fine until governments stir shit up and even then it’s abit of name calling beacause that’s low hanging fruit

You guys definitely need to check out 'The Thieves Banquet' It's one of his albums, and also the title track of that album is just ridiculous. It's something that even my 60+ Yr old dad who was a 70's punk. Has no interest in rap at all, likes. And he says more people need to listen to & take on board. He's a very educated guy, and he's the reason I'm back at college now getting my certificates. Because I want to be better, and it doesn't happen by being sat on my arse. Rewards take time & effort. Everyone wants to be famous but when you ask them "famous for what?" They can't answer it. They only see the end goal they don't appreciate the work it takes to get there. Much love from England.

He didn't do university, but was invited to and spoke at the Oxford Union (uber nerds invite the greatest contemporary figures to speak to younguns there) and has some honourary doctorates. I think he's proud he didn't go to to university. I'm a nerd and massive proponent of higher ed, but can see his point... it might take you in certain directions/limit ya - but it certainly didn't limit my critical thought, and can't imagine anything would constrain Akala's. There's a great doc series by Raoul Peck I think you'd both enjoy (is enjoy the right word?... and there are bits of imagined/alt histories/subversions- like a post modern doc... yup that sounds super pretenious, fuck it) called 'Exterminate All the Brutes' HBO about the creation of 'blackness' and 'whiteness' by European elites to aid the exploitation of the New World that is really brilliant, horrid, but brilliant. Peck is Haitian, but then lived as the 'implanted' ruling class in post colonial Africa and went to Uni in Germany so he's got an amazing outside/ inside perspective (he also gotta oscar nom for a film on James Baldwin, 'I am not your N£gr0', which I've not watched yet but its on the list) Great seeing you both so exciting and activated by Akala's work. We're v pleased to have him in the UK
