THIS is Arctic Monkeys. I recognize that AM is great music, but it never scratched me like their first two albums did and do. I won't even name tracks because they're all amazing. ''Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not'' and ''Favourite Worst Nightmare'' are amazingly good.

@@BeersBars Not the live version at Glastonbury though. That should be imprinted in your brain:" yes, we've done 'when the sun goes down' , what we have yet to do is the live version at Glastonbury 2007" (Trust me on this guys, it is WELL fucking worth it. Plus the clip is actually 2 songs (Brianstorm) which you haven't done yet) ;)

The whole of the first album bangs. These lads grew up a couple of miles down the road from where I am in Sheffield. Def Leopard played their first gig in my local working man’s club and Joe Cocker lived on the next street across from me. Sheffield is a proper music city.

I was at the front at that gig, my wife complained that people kept throwing beer, I pointed out that there was a 2 hour queue, both at the beer tent & at the toilets, & said "it aint beer" 😂 As rap fans you might appreciate an early banger from the 1st album called "A view from the afternoon" Double A side released on an EP just before the album release called, "Who the f@#£ are the arctic monkeys" 🫡 came out the day i 1st saw them in April 2005 at Londons Brixton Academy

The band were not long out of school when this sent them to stardom, although they had a huge following here in Sheffield. They went to school about 5 minutes walk from my house, and once this song hit the charts, the place was swarming with journalists trying to find stories on them 😂

I’d say Arctic Monkeys are the biggest band to come out of the U.K. this century tbh. As people have said, Alex was 19 when he released their debut album, which went on to become the fastest selling debut album in U.K. history at the time. You couldn’t do much wrong than watching their first Glastonbury headline- you can tell how young they are; dressed in tracksuits or jeans and jackets, like they’ve just come off the streets or from down the pub. Not many would dare to dress like that for their debut at (arguably) the biggest festival slot in the world.

They were the first band I could relate to due to that. A pair of sneakers a jean and a hoodie, long messy hair. Getting drunk at 15 the friday after school in a rainy western european city. À city ruined by the fall of the steel industry, drinking young, people using heroin, football. Damn those years were golden 😂

When they came out the buzz was similar to when Oasis came out. They were the next big thing coming out of the UK and it was incredible to witness both eras . I was lucky enough to see AM in 2006 at Kentish Town Forum around the release of their debut album and it was amazing, you had to turn up early afternoon to grab a wristband and proof of purchase which back then was almost unheard of! - there are a couple of grainy vids on KZbin 😂

The beauty of the Arctic Monkeys is that each of their albums will be someone's favourite. Most fans will generally pick one of the first two and I can totally see why, they're incredible and WPSIATWIM perfectly encapsulated what it was like to be a regular 18/19 year old lad in the mid 00s but personally I think AM is their best, most complete album. There’s a difference between the Arctic Monkeys that were proudly from Sheffield and the Arctic Monkeys that went and came back from America. Alex Turner used to be a cool teenager like this, just making music with his mates - now he’s a self entitled pretentious front man. I still like R U Mine and Do I Wanna Know is fine, but the earlier albums set very much in little old Sheffield with songs based on personal experience - that’s Arctic monkeys at their best.
