Pinto Bean Harvest in the Red River Valley

Ahoy! Boil em, mash em, stick em in a stew. Pinto Beans! Today we are harvesting pinto beans in the Red River Valley of North Dakota. We see beans that are straight combined as well as knifed and then combined. We actually had a very rare case of both types being harvested at the same time right next to each other. What a treat!
We also get to run a local and unique tool designed to help the pinto beans not stick to the soil. We call the tool the "Rodweeder."
This was a very fun video with lots of life and farming adventures. Enjoy!

We're a sugar beet farmin’ family in the Red River Valley of North Dakota! Our farm specializes in growing sugar beets, hard red spring wheat, sunflowers, corn, soybeans, and various types of dry edible beans. The legacy currently consists of my dad, my uncle, my two older brothers, and I (Beet Farmin Mitch).
I am a 6th generation family farmer recently graduating with college degrees in both Agricultural Economics and Crop and Weed Sciences. Enjoy as I showcase our operations everyday work, grow as a young farmer, be a goofball, and walk out the most important thing to me. My love for King Jesus!

The legend in my family is that my grandfather, who was a farmer/carpenter in the Davenport Weymere area somewhere, when he built a building, he would use the horizon for a level! I'm glad I found your channel finally someone from North Dakota to challenge the boys from Montana and the guys from Minnesota! My Mom is from Grand forks and my Dad's family is from Walhalla area but sadly my dads parents both passed away in the late 1940's when the kids were little and the farm had to be sold and the kids went to live with relatives but I still love going back to the Walhalla and Cavalier area and being around the farms. Thank you for the look into your family farm as your video's are fun and informative to watch keep up the great work!!!

We never raised pinto beans except in our garden. My Mom canned about 80 to 150 pints each year for the family. Oh man the best beans I have ate were for sure Mom's canned beans. Once when my baby sister was living in Dallas she made friends and of course they came over to eat occasionally. Of course sis had Mom's beans on the table. As they were eating the couple ask where can we purchase these beans ? We love them. Sis said well you can't purchase these beans they came out of my Mom's garden. Mom is gone now and I have missed not only her but for sure her garden fresh beans and her canned beans. I sure love beans.

Refried Beans Thanks for sharing you informative video about local farming in one of the Red River Valleys in the USA. Now that I have seen the pinto beans harvested and learned how it is done, it gives pinto beans some personality. For some reason, the seem similar to Black Eyed Peas. One of our favorite meals is tacos, and for that we use Amy's Light-in-Sodium Vegetarian Organic Refried Beans Traditional Style. When added to steamed brown rice, chopped lettuce and tomatoes, they make fine tacos. Peace.

Really like the smell of cutting/and harvesting dry beans its a very different/unique smell...Rod weeders have been around for a long time seen my first in the mid 70s out in Montana it was attached to the back row of chisel plow, to the shanks, they used 16-18'' sweeps on the chisel plow and only went 4-5'' deep and the rod clipped the weeds that snuck through. For long days in the field get your self a 12 volt roadpro for reheating/or cooking food they work great.

Really enjoy your videos. Great job! FYI rod weeders are used by all onion farmers. It’s used to undercut the onions and cut the roots so they can dry down for harvesting.

We ran rod weeders in the Texas Panhandle back in the 60's. We did row irrigation and would pre-water the ground, then run the rod weeder in front of the planters to kill any weeds and make a better seed bed.

When I was young I asked my mom why she sifted thru pinto beans she was getting ready to cook... I was surprised to learn she was pulling out rocks & even hardened chunks of dirt... Always got a rock or two out of every pound..

That's just like what we do with peanuts here in North Carolina when it rains. We use a Vine conditioner to raise the peanut vines up. Fluffs them up

We knife all of our beans. Always have, we’re planning to switch into straight cut in the next couple of years though.

I grew up on an irrigated farm near Greeley, Colorado where we grew pinto beans and sugar beets too. I used to judge beans in FFA. What kind if church do you attend and where did you go to college? I went to Colorado State University in Fort Collins.

I went to NDSU in Fargo, ND and majored in Agricultural Economics and minored in Crop and Weed Sciences. I was a part of Chi Alpha Campus Ministries (Christian group) during my time at NDSU. I moved back home to farm about a year ago and I am an active part of a church in my hometown. It’s a Christian church that is an AFLC denomination.

I'm just curious, what us the average bushels per acre for pinto beans in a normal year? Sorry if I missed it. Do they compare to soybean yields? Thanks for sharing.

60 pounds a bushel but they usually go by pounds per acre. Range from around 1600-2400 pounds an acre normal year bumper crops can be high as 3000

Dry land farmers in eastern Washington have been using rod weeders for a hundred years for weed control in stubble fields after harvest. They farm fallow land every other year out there

Interesting. SW Colorado pintos last I knew were cut mature green, windrowed and then dried in shock and combined with a pick up reel.

Usually I run the concave around 2.9, fan max, rotor speed 310 dry. I just go by what the combine book says for pinto beans. Sieves I adjust accordingly. Sometimes I need to make small adjustments along the way.

With Peanuts the combine has to remove the peanuts from the vines but leave them in the shells Dockage is for LSKs (loose shelled kernals).... Doesn't matter whether they are split or not...... The trailers have a rollup canvas covered open top and an expanded metal sub floor .....where they can hook a gas dryer to lower the moisture to about 10%...... All transfers are by belts..... no augers... Stored in a big building on a cement floor.....
