I’m not sure people understand the levels this guy has reached in his craft. I legitimately think this may be THE highest achievement in history by a human. Those who’ve spent countless hours playing the violin understand this. A small percentage of violinists can reach levels where you can play Paganini and Ernst quite well, and you’ll still NEVER be able to do the things this guy can do. And it’s not even just that he’s able to play the notes, which in itself would be close to impossible for many due to not having even the sheer physical abilities, he plays incredibly musically. It’s like, if everyone is trying to achieve a 3:30 mile run, and then all of a sudden someone comes and does a 2:30 mile run.

Beethoven himself wrote many passages for violin that consist of multiple voices. Bach before him composed 3 full-blown fugues for solo violin. It isn't a new or redefined idea. But using your thumb on the fingerboard? That's pretty unique for this instrument.
@Musicrafter122 жыл бұрын
Bach's fugues often have only one voice doing anything substantial at a time, maybe two. Tedi Papavrami transcribed the Great G Minor for solo violin a while back -- now that's true polyphony. The first solo “polyphonic” virtuoso violinist/composer to eclipse and even surpass the great Paganini. This is tantamount to “one giant leap”. What a great privilege to behold this astonishingly gifted genius deliver yet another unprecedented and unrivaled performance milestone in music. Will virtuosi be courageous enough to take on this piece as part of their repertoire? Perhaps, but these masterpieces will stretch and task us “mere mortal” violinists beyond our limitations of dexterity and precision. Witnessed here indeed is audacious and ground-breaking mastery and creative prowess. One need only listen to solo works such as his J.S.Bach Air on G-string, “I Brindisi”, “Dies Irae”, Mozart “Eine Klein Nachtmusik”, and “Sanctus et Agnis”, to appreciate the genius. His brilliantly innovative expansion of fingering techniques now reach beyond complacency and free us from mediocrity. Roman Kim, like Paganini before him, has profoundly redefined what is possible with a bow and four strings.
@aegeanenjoyer668 Жыл бұрын
Ernst already did that and for solo violin, surpassed Paganini. Kim is on the same league if not higher when it comes to fully harnessing the possibilities of the violin as a polyphonic instrument. Although there are others doing it too, for Bach or Liszt for example. So it's more like people are finding this way to further advance violin technique. That, and guitar transcriptions with endless controlled ricochets (see Ricci's or Leong's transcriptions).

Over the last 30 years, whenever I met violinists, I told that violinists must use thumb to play violin and develop technics, but they told it was impossible. Now I can see it is possible. I have been waiting for this moment around 30 years and finally I can prove that I was correct. Dear Roman KIM, I really appreciate you prove my word. Thank you. 😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣

From the comments you can see why he is not a resounding success, there is a lot of envy. And the more one knows about music, the more this feeling grows against the most talented violinist of this century. I, and every human being alive, have not seen Paganini play, but this lad beats them all by a wide difference in talent and makes me proud to have seen Kim perform such a marvel.

I dont know if anybody else has noticed a slightly hidden technique Kim employs, which is the addition of his thumb to the regular four-finger system. The fact that he actually practices it and proves its feasibility is really jaw-dropping(I say this because I once had the same thought of using my thumb, but since it’s so unconventional, as a consequence, I never thought it’s even possible😅)

Mind blowing arrangement and playing! Those hybrid bow waving double stops, with legato on one string and flying stacatto on the other, might just be an actual first in violin technique; not something one sees every day (or century). Thank you, Roman. You made my day significantly better.
@stephen66912 жыл бұрын
Roman Kim is completely next level, but that technique has been around since the eighteenth century! I don't know the violin rep as well but there's a couple of cello etudes by Duport that use it.

It's not just the technique. It's the legitimate realization of the parts that Beethoven wrote. It's simply fabulous artistry of the violin and arranger and reverse orchestrator rolled into one. I think Beethoven would be proud. He knew a kindred spirit when he found one..the people who broke through all the boundaries to do something different. "Art must not stand still"

Roman Kim....I don't know where that other person playing the violin is hidden in this video, as often it truly sounds like two people are playing perfectly in sync.
