I think Napoleon from 1927 is the greatest film ever made and I love the original version of J'accuse. However I've never seen this before, but watching it almost brought a tear to my eye...Abel Gance is simply brilliant!

On one level, this is outrageously corny and over-explicit: "the voice of the forest, the song of the birds: never again, never again!" It's also a-historical: we know that Beethoven didn't go deaf all at once, but gradually and over a very long period. But the sequence is very beautiful visually, Harry Baur's performance is lovely and the relationship between Beethoven and the boy is moving. Abel Gance lacked taste and restraint, but not genius.
