The precision of the ensemble and the way in which such ostensibly inexpressive gestures can bring about the orchestra's obeying of Dr. Reiner's every last musical wish is extraordinary. The problem with this and other Reiner performances is that all this became an end in itself rather than a means toward the expression of musical impulses as they are in, for example, Szell's performances with the nearby Cleveland Orchestra. (I have to assume that the continual speeding up of the tempo in the coda was necessitated by the exigencies of "live television". How great, though, was this and the Boston Symphony and Bernstein's concerts for "young people" were then on television. One has to be over 80 to recall the optimism people had for television's capacity to transmit programs of educational and cultural value!

This so epitomizes the human condition at one of its intellectual peaks of civilization. I am extremely lucky because I did go to see Reiner conducting CSO a few times as a young boy. Those were unforgettable times. Carved permanently for all the ages.

This certainly belies the jokes about his minuscule baton technique.

Wow! The conductor had a proper baton , as in long !!!!The musicians can clearly see his baton for a change, unlike Gergiev with his toothpick baton

Reiner’s face is scary. A inexperienced player would be intimidated.

If you want a superb interpretation, listen to Koussevitzky and the BSO.
