Because we no longer travel at sea on sailing vessels, as they did in Beethoven's time, it's hard to understand the tone painting here. When a ship was becalmed, due to an absence of wind, progress was halted and the ship was basically stalled, a possibly calamitous occurrence depending on how long it lasted. Beethoven clearly portrays this absence of motion in the opening. When the 6/8 section begins, one definitely hears the stirring of the wind as the ship resumes its course.

In the six-eight passage, the quarter-note-eighth-note-followed-by-a-rest figures sounded more like two eighth notes, not a quarter and an eighth.

@@GUILLOM, Sam hat schon recht! Wenn es sich um Meeresstille handelt, kann ein "forte" nur relativ sein und nicht real! Zum Beispiel ab Takt 27 f. 🤔 Und die glückliche Fahrt ist kein stürmisches Wildwasser-Rennen mit anfeuernden Zuhörern..... ? Ist es nicht übertrieben dargeboten ?
