First of all, his repertoire, which over the years has been narrowed down to Bach, Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven - whose complete sonatas and piano concertos he will perform on recordings and in concert - Schubert, Schumann and Brahms, of which he was one of the greatest interpreters. Then there is the style, with a rigorous construction based on an in-depth study of the score, a nobility of tone and a sobriety of means that are very characteristic. We all should be grateful to Classical Music - Reference Recording for the excellent remastering of one of the summits of the gigantic German School of pianists that filled the XXth century with superb, highly personal, classical interpretations of the German piano composers. Those huge composers, piano players and orchestra conductors represent a cultural mainstem, an achievement of. the human race, a major step in human culture, an edifice of human creativity. A monumental contribution to the history of mankind that exists thanks to the technology of music recording and digital preservation.

Many Austrians love Schubert, Mahler, and Mozart; many Czechs love Smetana; many French love Bizet and Debussy; many Germans love Bach, Brahms, and Wagner; many Hungarians love Liszt. Beethoven touches our hearts, regardless of nationality.

How many young people know Backhaus (1884 - 1969)? According to google : "At the time of his death, Backhaus had nearly completed his second complete Beethoven sonata cycle. All that was missing was the Hammerklavier Sonata." There is a mono recording, though. But, I still miss a stereo recording. His Emperor concerto (in this set) was the first ever LP I bought - sixty (give or take) years ago. Since then I heard many pianists playing Beethoven but Backhaus is still my most favorite pianist of all time.

Very very VERY good recording, great pianist and wonderful orchestra. I was listening to another video of the same Beethoven works, but performed by some other group and it is incredible the difference that there can be between two orchestras: one just mediocre and this one, which is by many considered to be the best in the world. Absolutely insane. Next step listen in HD.
@leestamm31872 жыл бұрын
You rightly note a critical factor in the performance of concertos. The handling of the accompanyment is of crucial importance. Even great orchestras can be mismanaged in this task. It must always be in proper balance with the soloist and never at cross purposes. Some conductors have a gift for it while others, even among the all-time greats, do not. These recordings are superb in this regard, with Isserstedt and Backhaus totally on the same wavelength.
