Truly one of the gems in the 32 sonatas. That's not surprising of course; every one of his sonatas are incredibly valuable. But Ive lost count of the number of times that the menuetto randomly popped into my head over the years. Beethoven is probably the master of the minuet/scherzo and this one is my favorite.

The second movement has the descending Arpeggio that you can hear in Mahler 5th symphony adagietto. The last chords are direct inspirations for Schubert with the dissonance you find in so many of his pieces. Such a perfect sonata

I'm quite a fan of the Baroque - but like the Romantic period too. I've just been getting deeply into Schubert's dissonance. Can you recommend a couple of your favorite dissonant Schubert pieces? It will help cut to the chase. P.S. I'm very surprised that Beethoven was a fan of Schubert but I'm glad he was and hope Schubert learned of it before his own, very early death.

Got tired of playing a Mozart Piano Sonata so I broke out my Beethoven Volume I and this no. 7 is difficult for me to play but it is beautiful! One of hardest ones to master of his piano sonatas in my opinion

It’s overshadowed by the Pathetique and other sonatas. Unfortunately, this is how the dynamic is for most classical music (obviously). Not every piece gets the recognition it deserves

With all respect for Barenboim, he plays the second movement at negative speed. My personal favorite interpretation of the second movement is by Friedrich Gulda.
