Over 800 singers from around Australia came together at the Sydney Opera House to sing Beethoven's "Ode to Joy" on Sunday 9 June 2019. ABC Classic presenters Vanessa Hughes and Damien Beaumont joined in this very special event.
The performance was a part of ChorusOz, run annually by Sydney Philharmonia Choirs to let people who can't commit to a regular choir have the opportunity to sing at the Sydney Opera House.
Performed by Sharon Zhai (soprano), Bronwyn Douglass (mezzo-soprano)
Brad Cooper (tenor), Simon Meadows (bass-baritone), ChorusOz 2019, Sydney Philharmonia Orchestra, Brett Weymark (conductor)

I was blessed to sing Ode To Joy at Cincinnati's Music Hall, along with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and the May Festival Chorus. What an honor! Beethoven is my favorite composer, and this was the height of my musical experience.

Translation DeepL Translator Joy, beautiful spark of the gods, Daughter from Elysium, We're entering fire-drunk, Heavenly one, your sanctum. Your spells are binding again, Which fashion strictly cures; All men become brothers, Where your gentle wings dwell. Choir. Be embraced, millions! This kiss of the whole world! Brothers - above the stars Must be a dear father living. Who has succeeded in the great throw, Being a friend of a friend, He that hath won a fair lady Mix in his cheers! Yes - whoever even one soul Be blessed upon the face of the earth! And those who never could, steal Weeping from this bond. Choir. Which inhabits the great ring, Cherish the sympathy! Guide them to the stars, Where the stranger is enthroned. Joy drinks all beings On the breasts of nature; All good, all evil Follow her trail of roses. Kisses she gave us and vines, A friend tested in death; Lust was given to the worm, And the cherub stands before God. Choir. You're falling, millions? Do you sense the Creator, world? Find him above the stars! Above the stars he must dwell. Joy is the strong feather In eternal nature. Joy, joy drives the wheels In the great world clock. Flowers lure them out of the germs, Suns from the firmament, Spheres she rolls in the rooms, That Seer Rohr does not know. Choir. Happy as his suns fly Through heaven's boundless possibilities, Walk, brothers, your path, Happy to win like a hero. From the truth fire mirror She smiles at the researcher. To the virtue steep hill Guides them of the Dulders Bahn. On the faith sun mountains You can see their flags flying, Coffins blasted through the crack You are in the choir of angels. Choir. Courageously suffer, millions! Tolerate for the biter world! Above the starry firmament Will a great God reward. Gods cannot be rewarded; It's good to be like them. Let Gram and Armuth come forward, Rejoice with the glad ones. Let grudges and revenge be forgotten, Our mortal enemy is forgiven. No tears shall press him, No regrets nibble him Choir. Let our register of debts be destroyed! Reconcile the whole world! Brothers - above the starry firmament Judge God as we judge. Joy gushes forth in goblets, In the grape of golden blood Drinking soft-minded cannibals, The despairing heroism - - Brothers, fly from your seats, When full Roman circles, Let the foam splash to the sky: This glass to the good spirit! Choir. Praise the whirling of the stars, That of the seraphic hymn praises, This glass to the good spirit Above the starry sky up there! Strong courage in heavy suffering, Help where innocence weeps, Eternity sworn oaths, Truth against friend and foe, Male pride before royal thrones, - Brethren, if it is good and blood - Earning his crowns, Doom of the liars! Choir. Seal the circle of salvation tighter, Swear by this golden wine, To be faithful to the vow, Swear it by the star judge!

This must be one of the very greatest compositions ever to have been written. This performance, however, a little too rushed, lacking in definition and style (compare with Barenboim's versions with the East West Divan Orchestra). The acoustic is not great and possibly too many choristers seemingly slightly under rehearsed. Nit picking a little here I know....but perfect music should be performed perfectly.

Unfortunately - owing to the European Union's annexation of this German National Anthem as its own - it is now unacceptable to play any version of this before the British Public! In fact, it could even be a deliberate tactic on the part of KZbin to rub our noses in European Union Imperialism!
