Jordi Savall is an absolute legend. I've seen him live in Seattle many times with his small ensembles. This performance is stunning. Adding to the effect is hearing this on a new set of wired headphones that allowed me to hear sections of the orchestra I usually only hear in the concert hall. Wonderful!
@teejayaich4306Ай бұрын
Wonderful performance, but if you now have a proper set of headphones, I have to say that Andres Orosco-Estrada's renditions of all Beethoven stuff (and much else) with the Frankfurt Orchestra is recorded and forwarded with such incomparably better audio quality - as does Paavo Jarvi's work, and Klaus's work on the 9th at least with the Oslo Philharmonic. I'd love to have this video with super hi-fi audio, but it's really rather muddy and blurry for such an important song.

I have several collection versions of BEETHOVEN'S Symphony No. 9, and I feel that every conductor has his or her own unique interpretations of performance. I am so grateful that I am listening to different versions of the 9th Symphony, finding BEETHOVEN'S exciting differences in each interpretation, not unwilling or strange to hear! Therefore, that's the reason to love BEETHOVEN and all the SYMPHONY works of his!

I just heard the studio version released recently together with symphonies 6, 7 and 8 and I'm at a loss for words, this is a gigantic contribution to the canon of the best recorded performances of Beethoven's symphonies - of all, not just the ones with period instruments. So fresh, so enjoyable, so alive and so well recorded!
@micheltanaka24202 жыл бұрын
Not content in making an excellent interpretation, Savall's style of conducting is wonderful: he uses a baton and a score, has very precise movements and does not shake his whole body during the finale just to "look cool".

I have never heard the tempos better--the tenor's "march" in B-flat major hewing much better to Beethoven's intended dotted half note = 84 (instead of Beethoven's nephew Karl getting it wrong with a dotted quarter note = 84)--and with so many other excellent tempos, particularly the vivid ending! It all just fits better. Mr. Savall conducts a bit like very late Mahler: not with a lot of motion, but with such superb and extraordinary results.

The orchestral sound is great. I especially love the growl of the contrabassoon! But I may be too accustomed to earlier Romantic performances to appreciate some of these tempos. The Adagio especially left me a little cold; I'm used to a much slower tempo there. Still, the other three movements make up for it. I really like the quickstep tempo in the Alla Marcia, with the honking contrabassoon.

Manuel Walser - baritone ~ I absolutely fainted dead away when this extraordinarily soloist began his part. This man has a voice to send shivers up and down your spine - and his looks are spellbinding. All the soloists were superb, and though I am not a big fan of "original instruments" this orchestra was tremendous. Jordi Savall is in charge of the whole performance, and as usual, is calm and collected to the nth degree! Beethoven will be around long after all of we have left this miserable world.
