not even going to mention her technique, or color, or touch, which are unique. but the feeling of great sadness and finality of life, and even insite of what's beyond it,- that our new generation of musicians don't have. at best, there are pretty sounds. when its slow, its too slow, and disjointed. when its fast, its too fast, losing tension and power. bravo, Ms. Pires. your art changes us all. leon igudesman

Didn't know Maria ever played the Appassionata. Impressive performance, to say the least. Tempestuously dramatic, but without banging the work out of recognition.

Profunda y sutil esta gran dama toca al genio con la humildad de un niño y la firmeza de un roble. La edad ayuda a interpretar a Beethoven, dice ella, mas en esta ocasión, aún joven, supo darle a su toque el punto de sazón. Sin estridencias ni vahídos María Jõao logra imprimir rapto y soltura, llevándonos por el estrecho margen de la fuga hasta turbarnos de emoción. ¡Qué no hubiese dado por encontrarme aquel día en Tenerife para escuchar su interpretación de la Sonata nº. 32, que tanto se demoró en tocar! Imagino allí esta sonata al modo de aquellos versos de Octavio Paz: «Como en el mar desierto surge, de entre las olas,/ una que se sostiene,/ estatua repentina,/ sobre las verdes, líquidas espaldas/ de las otras, las sobrepasa,/ vértigo solitario, y a sí misma,/ a su caída y a su espuma,/ se sobrevive, esbelta,/ y hace quietud su movimiento,/ reposo su oleaje,/ tú, delicia, imprevista criatura,/ brotas entre los ávidos minutos,/ alta quietud erguida, suspensa eternidad ».

Sabias y muy precisas tus palabras amigo. Os recomiendo la versión de Emil Gilels de 1975 para tener un cuadro complementario a esta magistral versión de la portuguesa Pires. Saludos de un beethoviano de cepa pura.

I can't believe that in this day and age, someone skipped the mandatory repeat in the finale. Beethoven even wrote out, "repeat the second part".

The are many great pianists, but Pires is a notch above great. Her interpretations often take me to a transcendental realm... Why does the final chord though sound F major????
