Best performance I've ever seen. Beethoven's tempo, the right order of seating, period timpani and trumpets evoking the revolutionary feeling around 1800. And a smiling conductor who exactly knows how much freedom to give to the players.

I disagree about Beethoven's tempo. He clearly makes 2 diferent tempos at the very beggining wich is not written... Great performance, but, as we can see on the DW series about this project, there was no intention on making it the usual way.

+brian brunner My thoughts precisely as I listened to this whole series yesterday, and started it over again today. I've heard Beethoven under all of the great conductors, but never have I seen an orchestra so "into" the music. They play with an intensity and enjoyment rarely seen. Paavo Jarvi, himself, is as if he becomes the music. Can I explain it from a technical or even musical sense? Absolutely not. I know nothing of music other than what I hear and love. This takes the love of music up a notch or two for me.

@@jerrycallison6125 Same here. I have a subscriptions to the digital concert hall by the berlin philharmonic. They play this also under Järvi in one concert, but it's not the same. The energy is not the same. They are not completely "on board" with the conductor as the JKB is here. Your comment is a reminder for me of why I want to do music, why it's important to always give a 100%, and that if it's not with and out of pure love, then what for? Yes, yes, yes, the audience can and will tell the difference.

I have been listening to Daniel Barenboim lead the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra do this symphony for a very long time, at least once a week. Then today POOF it was gone from KZbin, no longer available. I tried listening to the Thielemann version and as usual Thielmann is no joy to watch, he is just so full of himself. Also there are also ads in Thielmann's version, WTF! I loved watching Maestro Barenboim lead his symphony, you could see his caring for its members. Maestro Jarvi seems to be cut from the same cloth as conductor DB, his love of the music, the respect he shows his orchestra. He looks to be having fun leading his musicians. Maestro Jarvi is a true joy to watch and the music is great, after all it is Beethoven! Thanks deepnosepicker for posting.

Brilliantly nuanced interpretation. Especially the last movement! Quite a tempo he set there. I remember I watched one of these Jarvi/DKB/Beethoven videos a few months ago and I wasn't too impressed, but this 1st symphony is truly a great performance. Beautiful!

Master Jarvi is by far, better than Barenboim in this symphony. Barenboim loves himself so much and forgets Beethoven. On contrary, Master Jarvi brings and keeps the spirit of Beethoven.

Barenboim had to make his steps to Proms, which is a wonderful `end-point` of something as well, as it happens in music sometimes. Small orchestras in Bremen are the opposite of, what big stages always will offer: Large orchestras :) Whatch Järvi with the Berlin Philharmonics (after his Beethoven-project with Bremen)... The dilemma returns: It`s not the same as with Bremen. It can`t. Because jumping out of a smile ? Conduct Bremen for such a dynamic eruption. Barenboim can`t be blamed or `scaled down` for this. But he really should drive to Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen and work with them, when it`s about Beethoven. In case he would: Any comparison not necessary between Masters. Barenboim `first` here, Järvi `first` there. I never would wish to miss them... both.

I would think that these are all personal preferences of the conductor. Some prefer it to be slighter faster to make the music more lively? Others might focus on the intricacies and ornaments present in the music. Most of the time it's also a combination of their interpretation and their understanding of what the composers want.

18:55 cellos (I think its cellos) play this "pam pam pam pam pam pam" (six notes ascending), I have heard the same 6 notes pattern in some other Beethoven (or maybe not?) piece, but dont remember where exactly, if somebody knows where it appears, please share. Why does the conductor observe the repeat of the first part of the menuet but not the second part, after trio / at 'da capo' repeat? For sake of consistency one would expect him to either observe repeats of both sections (a la Harnoncourt in Haydn and Mozart) or none of them (the old school way). This way it sounds weird. At a recent performance of Berlin Phil. Academy same thing has happened. Is this some new authentic approach?
