The young conductor is simply not taking in any of Mr Zander’s help to improve. He is simply going through the motion. How maddening. What a missed opportunity

what a conductor, what an orchestra he made out of young kids! Thats the challenge...its easy to make Berlin Phill play well. Trying to make young semi professional kids play well is the challenge. Zander should be considered one of the greatest conductors and music educators of our time.

Kudos to this young conductor…. So fraught a situation but he tries and tries. And this orchestra is SO GOOD!

Dude is just beating time or trying. I don’t think he’s feeling it and understands where the phrase leads.

Does anyone else like the slower tempo of the 2nd ending better? Then when it kicks into the next material at 0:55, back to tempo I. I kind of like that effect. To me it sounds like the harmony and timbre of the music suggests a kind of weariness or tiredness perhaps justifying a slower tempo before kicking it back into gear with renewed spirit and strength (I could imagine Furtwangler doing someting like this and pulling it off).

Much as I love Zander, surely 90% of a conductor’s work is in rehearsal so how is it possible to judge this young man’s performance without it?

I totally agree with you but it's about how he is being and how to build the music as a conductor and present it clearly. Watch and listen to the difference when zander conducts, he gives more information to the musicians with his gestures whereas the other conductor was giving constant, almost metronomic, gestures. Night and day when you listen to them side by side. Watch from 11:59 aswell Zander pretty much sums up why this is bad in rehearsal.

I think that's because it's a masterclass. So of course the maestro has to "judge" or, better, to give suggestions, based on the observation of the performance in that particular moment, which can be seen as a reflection/result of the rehearsals accumulated up until this moment.

Questo giovane non apprende, continua a battere il tempo come un forsennato senza dare alcuna indicazione all'orchestra che va avanti da sola, sicuramente più bravi di lui da non avere bisogno di questo tipo di direzione...
