Time after time, year after year, i keep coming back to this one... This interpretation is pure genius. I've heard the 6th many many times before earing this version, yet it seems i never really heard it. Maestro Jarvi and the orchestra did so well. Thank God and Beethoven for this gift to mankind.

This is the greatest piece of music ever written. And that comes from a jaded music fan whose tastes range from classical to industrial. This symphony re-unites us with nature. With ourselves. Beethoven was an utter genius.

Geoff P Well said Geoff, my music flits between the likes of Killing Joke to the avant garde but Herr Beethoven's music is the vibrational link between we human's and nature and the primordial forces itself. "What you are , you are by accident of birth, what I am, I am by myself. There are and will be a thousand Princes : There is only one Beethoven" said the man himself.

It's interesting because the third fifth and ninth are the 3 symphonies with the biggest orchestras. Perhaps people were simply more impressed by those symphonies because of the amount of musicians (compared to symphonies 2, 4, 8 for instance, which did not push the envelope in this respect at all)

You are 100% on the nail there Gaspare, some of the more lofty music critic types often dismiss this wonderful creation as being 'simplistic' and even 'trivial'. It is neither of these things, it is a profound expression of joy, of light, of the beauty of the world...which is no small accomplishment-it is often easier to express sorrow than joy.

Of the numerous video and audio recordings, this one stands out especially for the storm scene, just to mention one movement. The effect of this storm scene is a rare one that, in my opinion, Toscanini also achieved with the NBC Symphony Orchestra. Listen to how both conductors evoked the ferociousness, if not the terror, of the scene. Beethoven, even in his hard of hearing, would have loved it.
