Tempo is a great topic of discussion. On the score, Beethoven wrote "Allegro ma non troppo un poco maestoso" in 2/4 measure. Allegro non troppo is usually considered to be approximately 114 beats per minute (each quarter). For decades we got used to listening the recordings with an extraordinarily slow tempo. Even directors like Barenboim conducted recently the first movement at 60 beats (which is “andante maestoso”). In this version of Daniel Harding, the tempo chosen for the start of the movement is 85, which is even slower than "Allegro non troppo." One problem that increases the perception of high speed is the 2/4 measure, because the rhythmic accent returns every two and not every four beats (as would be the case with 4/4). Either way, what matters is the character of the piece, whose rhetoric sense exposes ideas from mystery to force and violence. I thing these ideas can be better expressed with a fast tempo (as Beethoven wrote in his score) and without mannerisms.

Yeah, but, at the end, all is good if it works. One can't deny the majesty of Furtwsngler's interpretation, specially the war recording with the Berliner, or Böhm's sublime 9 with the WPO. I personally love slow tempos, and fast ones, even HIP versions, I love Beethoven in all forms if it is played and interpreted with love, passion, musicality and respect.

Beethoven's wrote 88 to the beat. I don't totally beleave to that experimental metronomes, but it is true that the first movement was usually played too slow

The first section of the second movement has a repetition indicated. Some conductors skip repetition, but maestro Harding chose to repeat. Some bass strings forgot the repetition and started playing the transition (8 bars) into the second section (as it happens, correctly at 16:24)

Si, sono d'accordo. Purtroppo, non tutti i direttori di orchestra capiscono la definizione di _ma non troppo._ Io credo che dovrebbe essere obligatorio di studiare la lingua italiana quando si studia la musica, se vogliamo che la musica sia suonata con i tempi giusti. (Mi scusi per il mio italiano pero non ho avuto la fortuna di studiare la musica).

Se una persona ha studiato italiano, dovrebbe sapere che la cosa dopo “ma ”importa di più, quando un compositore ha scritto “ma non troppo”significa sta attenta,sii prudente, non troppo veloce, l'orchestra suona un po' più lento ma non è così lento come “allegro moderato”però i due tempi “allegro ma non troppo”e “allegro moderato”tante volte sono vicinissimi. Inoltre, tra“ allegro non troppo”e “allegro ！ma！ non troppo”anche c'è una piccola differenza...

Signori non diciamo fesserie.......Harding segue il metronomo indicato dal compositore, così anche Chailly nella sua meravigliosa integrale. Peraltro qui non si tratta di velocità, ma di contrasti e forza dinamica.....questo è il Beethoven che chiude un'epoca e anticipa ciò che poi sarà nel Novecento. Harding che del genio di Bonn è magnifico interprete non fa altro che dimostrarlo. Beethoven è un nostro contemporaneo, la forza e la rabbia espressa dai primi due movimenti ne sono la prova.

Discrepo. Esta no es una sinfonía solemne. Es un grito desesperado que clama al mundo por comprensión por la decadencia que experimentaba el autor en la madurez de su vida. Es furiosa, a veces melodiosa como si hubiera querido reflejar sus breves momentos de buen humor, pero es rabiosa, como si hubiera perdido algo y lo busca, lo busca con ansiedad sin encontrar nada. Es una composición que es el alma del Beethoven que chilla por reclamar aún su espacio entre los genios. Y en esta tesitura, es adecuado tocar la novena con pasión, con algo de velocidad y de impulso. Y el ‘ma non troppo’ no significa lentitud o tempo reposado.

Das mit dem zu schnellen Tempo im 1. - aber auch im 3. - Satz stimme ich zu. Leider sieht es so aus, dass nicht viele Dirigenten die Bedeutung von _ma non troppo_ verstehen. Fließend italienisch können sollte eine Voraussetzung sein, wenn man seinen Musikabschluss bekommen will. Dann wurde die Musik mit richtigeren Tempis gespielt werden. Allerdings, so schlecht finde ich diese Interprätation nicht. Ich finde die Klangfarbe toll und vor allem die Pauken, die toll rauskommen! Man hätte deutlich mehr rausholen können, aber durch dieses zu schnelle Tempo, kam aus diesem Werk weniger als man sich wünschen könnte. Das ist sowohl natürlich Schade wie auch irgendwie frustrierend. Aber wer weiss? Vielleicht wurde dem Maestro gesagt, in Zeiten wo Geld das Maß aller Dinge ist und wo die Devise "Time is money" gilt, er habe nur eine Stunde und sieben Minuten, um dieses Werk aufzuführen, und keine einzige zusätzliche Sekunde. An dieser Stelle hätte ich dieses _ma non troppo_ auch ignoriert.
