In India, we use the pressure cooker daily... the pressure releasing is called 'Whistles'..Most of our food cooked is calculated on the number of whistles released

I'm used to Brazilian pressure cookers - slightly different in some ways, especially in relation to the pressure valve! It doesn't pop and there isn't this huge amount of steam: it just softly goes into letting some steam out, with no fuss. It was a huge scare just now while trying a Hawkins cooker for the first time and that's why I'm here. Good news: I was doing it all correctly. Thanks for the video. :)

i've been using hawkins pressure cookers for almost 20 years and have several sizes, i've found that it really isn't necessary to heat it so hot that the regulator lifts and blows that hot cloud of steam.... set the heat for a constant rocking of the regulator and start timing the cooking at that point and it works perfectly.

instead of releasing the steam, and pressure, when the cooking time is up, you can just put the pressure cooker in the empty kitchen sink, and run some cold water on the lid, and the steam / pressure will condense in seconds, you will hear the lid release sound, then turn the water off, which is better than releasing the steam into your kitchen, plus it is quiter, or you can just turn the heat off, and leave cool down if you are not in a hurry. we have been using pressure cookers, since 1956, I like your videos very much. thanks.

This is intriguing, I live in the high desert where the air is so dry the release of some steam into the house is always a welcome thing, but I'm going to try this today and I'm making a video so I'll put it in the video. Thank you!

Unless you have the induction-ready stainless steel version that the instructions specifically tell you not to cool with cold water. The magnetic steel base may warp and detach from the 304 steel body if you cool it with cold water.

@@marykayriley it's ok with the aluminum ones like you have, but my Induction stainless 3L one says do not do that as it may warp the steel. I got mine after seeing your videos, love it! It's so easy to use and a classic design. I appreciate all the thought that went into the safeguards and design with the oval lid. Thanks for introducing me to the Hawkins. Mine is also for car camping as well as home cooking.

OMG I am just trying out my first ever pressure cooker attempt by making chicken bone broth in a Hawkins 22L Big Boy (yes I'm a man and yes I had to go for the biggest one and yes the fact that it was called the Big Boy totally worked on making me want to buy it). The instructions that come with the cooker suck! Until I watched your video I had no idea that it was supposed to 'pop' or that steam was supposed to come out during the cooking process. I wasn't watching it all the time but was worried about the steam and water coming out the top. Seems to be OK now. At least trying a bone broth it gives me plenty of room for error! THANKS for this video. Lifesaver.

the seal lasts a long time, i use my 2-liter the most and the first seal lasted 11 years. my other hawkins cookers still have their factory seals. if you cook whole potatoes, be sure to poke them with a knife or fork or they can explode during cooking. fist-sized potatoes parcook in 5 minutes, cook soft in 10 minutes.

Hi! I'm currently looking into buying a pressure cooker and still wondering what the ideal size would be. If one is to use it to cook beans, how many portions would this 3L size fit? I suppose there's a rule to have it filled up to only a certain fraction of its full size?

Hi Carol, thank you for your comment. I have yet to work with expanding foods (such as beans, those that absorb water) in this cooker so I can't advise you on that. The manual is indeed woefully inadequate however I have found some good information at this link, it is the FAQ section on the Hawkins website: www.hawkinscookers.com/11.0.faq.aspx

Yes you can! I cook my beans and lentils in this cooker every day. You don’t need to put that much water. Just make sure that there is enough water to cover the beans and 1 more inch more. Cook abt 7-10 minutes if cooking beans and 5-7 minutes cooking lentils.
