Many don’t know that String was one of Bill Monroe’s Bluegrass Boys. He was replaced by Earl Scruggs. Legend has it that when Monroe asked String what he thought about Bill’s new banjo player, String replied, “He’s not very funny.” (Almost all bands of that era had one sideman who also did comedy and such was String’s role.)

Grandpa Jones and Stringbean were best friends; they lived across the ‘holler’ from one another. I’ve heard Grandpa Jones really had a hard time dealing with this tragedy. My heart breaks each time I think of those two sitting on their porches making their banjoes ring for one another.
@CAROLUSPRIMA2 жыл бұрын
String was targeted because it was well-known that he didn’t trust banks. (Which was a bit of a myth because although String did keep a lot of cash on hand it was shown after his death that he had hundreds of thousands of dollars on deposit, spread across several local banks.) He realized that there was something wrong when he arrived home and entered his house with his gun drawn. He died in an up close shootout with the robbers. When he entered his house String was “firing rapidly.” One of the Browns said that it was a miracle they didn’t get hit. The Browns left empty-handed. They overlooked a large amount of money sewn in his overalls. Further decades later when the house was torn down tens of thousands of moldy dollars was found behind the bricks around the fireplace. The Davidson County District Attorney who sent the Browns to death row was Tom Shriver, who as a then Criminal Court Judge taught me criminal law and procedure in law school. He occasionally talked about this his most famous case. When the death penalty as it then existed was declared unconstitutional for a time by the US Supreme Court in the 1970s the Browns sentences were commuted to life in prison. I always took some comfort in knowing that rather than begging for his life String died on his feet and fighting back.

Im a big fan of StringBean and Hee Haw. It speaks volumes of how screwed up our criminal justice system is that a maggot convicted of double murder can be out free and working for a church of all places, while his two innocent victims lost their lives for nothing but someone else's cowardice. I visit Stringbean and Estelle's grave whenever I get to Nashville and since I read that he always loved peppermint sticks, I always leave a peppermint stick there for him. May he rest in peace.
@stevenance48442 жыл бұрын
Stringbean was great. The motive was money. The brothers knew it was rumored that Stringbean carried and had alot of money hidden at his home. They never found it, but the people who later bought the home did. It was ruined from the fireplace or something? Stringbean had it somehow hidden in the bricks and the new owners saw flakes of paper that turned out to be money. Also, i'm not trying to bash the owner of this video but he said Hee Haw ran several seasons after Stringbean was murdered? Hee Haw ran for 25 years and had only premiered in 1969 if my memory is correct. We watched it for years and years. Not saying it was better or anything, just that it continued on for ages and had I think 25 seasons before going off the air. Grandpa Jones did find both Stringbean, but he found the wife first. This was all reported on in the news decades ago. Truly I like this guys videos, and not trying to be a know it all. I just hate when I watch something and there are bits and pieces left out. I remember well when this happened and it was a sad time for country music. I loved the Hee Haw skit where Stringbean would sit down with everybody and say he got a letter from home. Then he'd say it's right next to my heart and he'd start digging around his coveralls looking for it. He was awesome. This was such a senseless thing to happen. But everyone knew Stringbean didn't trust banks. He'd always kept his money at home. Bad thing was, alot of people knew this. I did see something about the one killer getting out or was trying to get out of prison. He should have been left in there to rot!

I watched Hee Haw and the Grand Ole Opry growing up. I seen Greenbean on Hee Haw... I didn't know about the murder of Stringbean and his wife. I always wondered what happened to Stringbean...he was on the show and then disappeared ... after my Mother had bought all episodes of Hee Haw and we were watching Stringbean performance did I look him up ... a couple months ago. Did I learn of his murder and his wife. I noticed Grandpa Jones seemed a bit irritated on the show... about something 🤔 and I wonder still why? 🤔 I listened to the trials of the ones who murdered Stringbean and his wife. Something doesn't set right with me...there is two places they mention where Stringbean's body was found. By the fireplace and at the entrance of his house.. seen the house inside video. The door was not in sight of the fireplace? And the video showed where the floor was cut to show for evidence or to hide the gun shot by the fireplace in my opinion. ..to take the bullets out as not to be identified from which gun from which it was fired. Otherwise I'm not satisfied with how thorough the case was investigated. And not happy ..a cold blood killer was released when all other get death row... the guy should have died along with his cousin ... in prison. I personally think someone not mentioned was involved... it just doesn't make sense or match up. ... I am a fan of Stringbean and Grandpa Jones.. the whole cast on Hee Haw. Not satisfied with the case. Definitely not satisfied with the release of a cold blood killer.
