Great question! A lot of students are confused by this. The past perfect is not really necessary in this context. You can say: "I read a whole book before I fell asleep" (using simple past twice) OR you can say: "I had read the whole book before I fell asleep" (past perfect for the first action and simple past for the second action). These two sentences communicate the same idea. Why do we have past perfect then if it is not really necessary? Sometimes, for style purposes, we want to emphasize which action happened first. Or perhaps we want to add some variety to our sentence structure. It can also be quite useful to know how to express the same idea different ways in situations where you are paraphrasing or summarizing. Here you want to share someone else's ideas without copying their sentences word for word.
