Mid-20th century modern furniture: Chair Makeover, Before and After
In this video you see Sepp n Shelley restoring an Easy Chair
The chair was found online in poor condition. Luckily it can be sanded easily as it is made of solid walnut wood
We used:
An orbital sander with the sandpaper grit 60, 120 and to finish 180
A Multifunction tool with a triangle sanding plate, sandpaper grit 60, 120, 180
The chair was sanded 3 times. After using the 180 grit and 120 grit the chair is wiped over with water to see whether there are any varnish rests or uneven areas on the surface.
Each time we waited until the chair was dry before we continued sanding.
The base material covering is removed, the staples extradited. The Springs are then checked to see if they are functioning to a good standard.
The chair is treated twice with oil (in our case with a hard wax oil)
Ensure the application of the oil is spread evenly
We used:
Hard wax oil
A cotton cloth
The covering over the springs is replaced and stapled into place
We used:
Pneumatic staple gun (an electrical stapler will also do the job!)
8mm staples
4mm coarse felt (that fits the size of the seating)
A ruler
The foam and padding is then cut to the size of the box cushions using a large kitchen knife or an electric knife. Spray upholstery glue is applied to the foam and the padding is wrapped around the foam
We used:
Measurements of seating and back rest
A ruler
A permanent marker pen
Large kitchen knife or electric knife
Some oil so that the knife cuts more smoothly
A piece of kitchen paper
Foam (in our case 8cm thick R18/25)
1cm padding
Material scissors
Upholstery glue
I sewed 2 boxed cushions (Not shown in video, there are lots of KZbinrs with videos on how to do this. This would have made the film to long and my sewing room is tiny therefore impossible to film in!)
I used:
Kirkby design material 140cm wide by 150 cm Long
4 endless zips each 70cm long

Beautiful result. My wife has an old midcentury rocker that needs restoration. You've given me the confidence to tackle it.

You omitted the bit where you sacrifice the ends of your fingers, trying to sand in and around the corners and nooks.

Yes, I agree, that is missing, my sewing room is tiny and it's difficult to Film in there. Perhaps one day I will have a large sewing room

A useful video on how to restore the wood. Would have been useful to show sewing the cushion covers too.

Thank you. yes, I agree that filming how to make the cushion covers would have been interesting, but unfortunately filming in my sewing room is impossible, it's sooooo tiny. I've attached a link from a super video. I learnt, from this video how to make a boxed cushion. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fajCZWOgo8-NeKc
