In the rock scene of the late 1970s, tensions within the Eagles were at an all-time high, culminating in Randy Meisner's shocking departure in 1977. As a founding member, Meisner's bass lines had defined hits like "Witchy Woman" and "Best of My Love."

To me, the best years of the Eagles were 71'-75'. Randy Meisner was awesome on Take It To The Limit. A cery emotional song for me, as it reminds me of my Grandmother. "A woman i'll never knew". Who died in the evening a few days before my 12th birthday. Who introduced me to the Eagles while we were waiting in line at the bank with her in Dumas , Tx in the early 80s. I saw one of their albums in 8track format, in her glove box. It was their Greatest Hits 71-75' with the Eagle on the water. I pushed it into the player and "Peaceful Easy Feeling" came on I was immediately hooked. Now I listen to that album on cd. Brings back wonderful memories of her and me.

I saw the Eagles in Ft. Worth Texas in July, 1977, in one of Randy’s last performances with the Eagles. It was without debate, the very best concerts I ever saw! Randy’s vocals on Take it To The Limit were spot on. That last final note is still hanging in the stratosphere over Ft. Worth, Texas and was without a doubt the highlight of the show for me. Jimmy Buffett opened, and he was just amazing!

Pretty sure both Randy Meisner and Don Felder (and going back even further Bernie Leadon) all seemed to have problems with Glen Frey and Don Henley. It is alleged that Bernie Leadon on his way out of the band due to songwriting issues and the band's musical direction proceeded to dump beer on Glen Frey's head. Don Felder was Bernie Leadon's replacement and allegedly had full rights as a member and was supposed to receive an equal share of the Eagles profits, that turned out to be untrue as Felder found out from Eagles manager Irving Azoff which led to a near fight, Felder's firing and subsequent lawsuits. Joe Walsh was never a full Eagle in his early years with the Eagles, but there are naysayers both ways on that story. Randy Meisner was allegedly a sensitive soul, and he chafed under Glen Frey's constant criticism and his berating the other members who stood up for themselves. I find it hard to believe that these members all left without the conflict being the main cause.

According to the set list the night in question Take it to the limit was played in the first half of the Concert, and Glen Frey wanted him to sing it a second time. Because the song hit Meisner's highest range and was taxing for him to sing being sick, it was contemptible for Frey to ask Meisner to sing it twice.

The vocal in a song like Take it to the Limit is an extremely difficult one to achieve. Especially night after night and when a singer isn't feeling quite up to it for whatever reason. As a singer gets older the falsetto will eventually leave the body so to speak, and there is a point where they need to lower the octave in order to get through a song. That would never work in Randy's case because we all want to hear the song up to the standard it was first presented. Randy was a great musician who should be appreciated and he had a great, great song for all time but it was also his undoing. I would guess that as time has passed the other members of this great band can now relate to this.

Since this video was about Randy and his time with the Eagles, I'll just stick to that . I wasn't there in the trenches with the band so I only know what I've read, and seen in interviews with the Eagles . However as far as Randy and Take It To The Limit, to me that will always be his signature song. As for the feelings of retiring the song due to Randy's departure ? This one is a half for and a half not. The for is that even though it's Randy's extraordinary voice, the song does belong to the band. Yet, Every time I hear it, Randy always comes to mind making it his song and will always state that Randy was and is still very much a part of the Eagles regardless of what form . When it comes to bands that we grew up with , originals always stick out and some just say it's not the same, and it's not. I do however admire those that carry on with the band because it not only keeps the originals alive, it also does the same with their music.

Can you conduct the same analysis as Fil at wings of Pegasus ? My lip laptop broke. This is my son’s iPad, and I have zero idea how to copy and paste the url. Even if you don’t have that equipment, if you listen you can tell the difference. Search take it to the limit live, then that will bring up Randy singing it from a 1977 live show. It is flawless. It’s beautiful. It’s also a fake. It’s been remastered when it’s auto tune. Go back to your search videos and find the one where Randy is wearing a white printed t-shirt. It’s still great, but there is a distinct difference.

He was one of the original members, and "Take It To The Limit" wouldn't have sounded right without him. And the reason Bernie LEEdon left was he was simply tired of touring. (what a crappy narration, can't even pronounce the band's names right)

Using Chicago as analogy is not a good comparison. They had their own problems from when Terry Kath died to when David Foster came on the scene. Foster and Peter Cetera turned Chicago away from their brass section classical music, jazz and R&B, and more to pop music to suit Peter Cetera's voice. The Eagles without Randy and Don Felder are just a cover band cashing in to suit Frey and Henley's avarice for money.

The more I learn over these last several years - I can't help but conclude that Glen Frey and Don Henley are just terrible human beings - sad - but the evidence seems to be over-whelming and from numerous sources. I've always liked Randy Meisner's music - especially in Poco - I just hate it when band members can't get along and break up - the fans are forever stuck in a "what might have been" mindset.

The Knoxville incident is a prime example of the autocratic, success obsessed Glen Frey. After a successful night's performance, how much difference would it make if the band didn't perform TAKE IT TO THE LIMIT as the encore? A few grumbling fans as they leave the venue? They were all doing a lot of coke, booze and whatever their sexual appetites required on a long tour. If Randy's voice is shot, a respectful bandleader would've said; 'no problem man, we'll give 'em something else' To Frey to demand Meisner do the song and insist that he hit all the notes is just; well, would you like to have a prick like that as your leader? Randy was a sensitive guy from Nebraska. Glen was a wise ass with attitude from Detroit.

Meisner didn't sing enough Eagles songs; love his voice. His contribution is often underappreciated, similar to that of Michael Anthony in Van Halen. What really irritates me most about this whole situation is how Schmidt and Walsh never found their balls to stand up to the two tyrants in the band - to come to the defense of Meisner and Felder and call out the greed and narcissism of Henley and Frey. Schmidt and Walsh are extremely talented and could have found a home anywhere else. Instead, they chose to take the easy way and become nothing more than paid monkeys, first to Henley and Frey and now just Henley. And now...the "Eagles" only pretend to perform live, stealing from their fans as they did from Felder and Meisner. Probably the smartest member of the band, Leadon saw all the signs and left early, presumably before they could ruin him too.

Me myself is a die hard eagles din Henley fan,I honestly believe god rest the bloke, but Frey was the impossible bloke, to me he always thought he was the biggest eagle, Frey didn’t like any capable guitarists in that band, that took the spotlight, who looked bigger and outshone him, Meisner, felder , even leadon , Glenn had problems with them all, even Joe Walsh and don henley had issues with him, but when it came to the crunch Henley always stood by his demands, he wanted to always be the captain of the ship, I thought , just let him be the boss man, and except it, and all will be fine, the last album they done, the long run, Glenn was evil to everyone, as Glenn said on there first reform gig, just to get the record straight, we never broke up, we just took a 16 year vacation, and he said it, so it was, and just to finish off this long paragraph, whatever gigs and line up plans there having,,, they need felder back, eagles will never be the same without felder and Walsh together, they were magical and so pretty to the ears, 😔😔👍

Correct. Randy Meisner always sang the song. Take it to the limit was sang by Randy early on in the concert as usual. It was not included In the encode that night in Knoxville. What Frey and Henley said in the documentary was bs. Having not been well that night, and having already been out for two escorts, he simply refused a third.
