Thank you for not rushing through the steps for removing the hard drive and for speaking clearly. I have one of those huge Dell Vista "something" that sits on the floor. Looking forward to recycling it if I can get help getting it out of my house onto the curb for bulky item pickup.😺

of course you are going to want to remove a hard drive before recycling your old computer. Once you recover your data from that drive from the computer you want to recycle, HIT IT WITH A HAMMER, or just put a drillbit thru it.

@kevintalkstech Жыл бұрын
If the computer is not an all in one, I’d suggest looking into another monitor since they are so cheap these days. You could repurpose the hard drive and still pull data from it. I’m not sure if it would do the same type of thing the all in one CD reader does though.

Ok so my sister had some repair people go in my room and I didn't notice that 2 of my old laptops were missing until I went to throw away the boxes many months after. Recently (a year later) my credit card had unauthorized charges on it (I can only gather that's how they got ahold of my CC) ? Aside from that, am I in danger with identity theft? I had factory reset them both and delayed disposing of them- I put them back in their respective boxes not thinking they would steal it but they in fact did....
@BGM64744 жыл бұрын
there are ways to dot it but you can wipe the drive completely and once you do that it cant be recoverd ever again and any ways most recycling place's do that cause they reuse them.

I have worked for a small company going on 20 years that has never had a true IT professional. I'm not a trained IT guy but because I knew the most about computers back in the mid 2000s, I ended up doing 90% of the company's computer stuff over the years, including disposal. As such, I have 3 shoe boxes full of old hard drives that I've removed from every computer that we've retired. At some point I need to take the next step on to destruction.
@kittybeck151 Жыл бұрын

Hi Kevin. I removed the hard drive from a 2007 Dell desktop computer. I couldn't download the data to a flash drive or cloud before I removed the hard drive because I had gotten the blue screen of death years ago and didn't know where to go from there. I did know I shouldn't toss the computer with the hard drive intact. Here it is 2020, and I've finally stumbled across your video. Very helpful, thanks. Is there anyway I can have someone retrieve the old pictures and family recipe files I had on the hard drive on my computer before it crashed a very long time ago? I have saved the hard drive just in case someone is able to help me with this. (I just wouldn't want a wayward employee from somewhere stealing my identity if they were to do this.) Thanks in advance.
@kevintalkstech4 жыл бұрын
Hi Lise, good question. You’re right that there are services out there that can attempt to recover the data. I unfortunately don’t have a lot of experience in this realm.Make sure the place you are going is trusted - I unfortunately don’t think you’ll be able to retrieve the data without some help.

Is there a way to get your information off the hard drive and save to another computer?
@kevintalkstech4 жыл бұрын
I would copy the contents from the old hard drive to a flash drive (USB stick). Then, you can hook that into another computer and copy the contents over. You could also copy the hard drive’s content to a third party cloud service, but I think the flash drive is going to be the fastest and most streamlined way.

Do recommend a reputable place to get money for a recycled computer once the hard drive has been removed?
@erichayes46615 жыл бұрын
most places that accept recycled computers nowadays will not give you money. There are too many components out there. Basically what they do is refashion the recycled components into computer systems that will be able to be sold to low-budget consumers...to make low cost computers that may last for a few years, for poor people that can't afford the expensive, cutting edge stuff.

Hilliary used bleachbit to scrub her drives. As a matter of fact, you can use a simple scrubber program using machine language to overwrite allllllll data on a simple spindrive. The people who know how to do that are ensconced in the 3rd generation of virus scrubbers. I have been doing this sorta thing for over 20 years. data security, backup, and construction/destruction. All the tools are available if you know linux. You kids crack me up....you make me laugh....its so enjoyable to watch you all try to come up with your own solutions...
