I'll never forget the first time I saw this movie. There was so much anticipation after having seen the first one. For whatever reason, I knew the duration of the movie, and I kept thinking "there's not enough time left for a good ending". I was almost stressed about it, and then ..... this. I can remember thinking that was probably the best movie ending I'd ever seen.

A great quote by the great Michael Haneke: “My films are intended as polemical statements against the American 'barrel down' cinema and its dis-empowerment of the spectator. They are an appeal for a cinema of insistent questions instead of false (because too quick) answers, for clarifying distance in place of violating closeness, for provocation and dialogue instead of consumption and consensus.”

I never understood the need to pair up/ship actors if chemistry of the characters they were playing was great.. I mean isn't this fantastic that someone acts so briliantly that he becomes a completely new person and has a completely own feelings? It's like these characters already existed and just used bodies of Julie and Ethan to express themselves fully.. I found that more beautiful that Julie and Ethan actually dating and then showing themselves on the screen. If not for other reason maybe because I think love is private.
@peterisawesomeplease2 жыл бұрын
I actually never felt like they had really good chemistry. They are just both really easy to project yourself and your dream partner on to. The acting is great and they are both pretty but the its the ideas in the dialog and cinematography that really made these movies.

How ironic. The point of the whole trilogy is to not romanticize what love is. Yet here is one of the most highly voted comments desperately romanticizing love with the typical "the two actors should get together in real life" bullshit, completely missing and contradicting the point of the work of art those very two actors tried so hard to communicate. Just recently I remember the first I saw this movie. I was probably 9 or something in 2005/6. My mom was not at home, probably on business trip and my father sleeping in his room. I started half time somewhere when they were on the boat, and was strangely attracted to the title of the movie "love before sunset (in Chinese)" and thought to myself "what is this about, love? Okay let's see what an adult love relationship would be like". And I was slightly keen and expecting some kissing scenes or more would happen haha. Didn't understand much about their conversations by the time, but I was touched by how beautiful they were on the boat, the way they talk, crossing the cannel in that lay-back afternoon in warm sunshine, this I remember. The rest thing I remember is this ending, watching her dancing and he smiled back with stars in his eyes, and she slowly faded in dark, and there I was stoned, didn't know what happened but I KNEW there was something so strong here that you don't need word to describe. And to see this again and reconnecting with all those images in my head, is fancinating how they haven't changed and I have changed.

I think it's a stunning ending for it's subtlety and originality. They're both conscious of the impending flight, and yet they're relaxing, having tea and chatting about Nina Simone. It's like the elephant in the room which is never addressed, as if that by continuing to talk about anything else they're delaying the inevitable. The fact that they're avoiding it also testifies to how much each of them want to stay. It conflicts with Before Sunrise where they planned what will happen next and how they'll see each other, but here they're just living in the moment. There's no extraneous hollywooding, it's subtle and it's real.

I don't think so. Jesse left his wife with kids for this woman. Its a superficial and selfish scene. Jesse said that he left his wife because of how Celine sings. Jesse here did not know the bipolar and depressive nightmare she actually was. Celine is all sunshine and rainbows until the reality of life kicks in and then she is nasty, mean, and selfish.

I love how strong this ending is ... I feel it even stronger than Before Sunrise... There's wanting, there's poetry, there's life... There's the moment... The Before trilogy is part of my favorite movies but I keep this hidden cause it's so close to my heart... Before Sunset is my top out of the three and I am so blessed that I got to trace back most of their paths in this movie as I spent some time living in Paris. It's just beautiful... Beautiful... ❤❤❤

I remember me watching it the first time on TV. I knew nothing abt this movie, didnt even know there was a prequel to it. I just loved the first 15 minutes where they were talking about life and relationships.....and gradually I realized this is a 'walking and talking' kinda movie, never saw anything like it before. The conversation throughout the movie was very gripping and thought provoking. Later, I saw the first part, and the 3rd one. This whole series is one true masterpiece!!

Best film of 2004 hands down. Best love story of the 21st century. Conversation between real people with a believable storyline and a fantastically plausible ending. This is my favourite of the trilogy. Julie Delpy stole my heart away in this film. Ethan Hawke was not this good since Gattaca (1997). Richard Linklater has made the ultimate love story of how fate can work miracles for two soulmates. Too bad social media has ruined this kind of romantic fiction. One day people will look back and see how even intelligent and mature people used to fall in love in an intelligent and heartfelt way. Guys please do not date any woman who doesn't like the Before trilogy 🤗🤗🤗🤗 Celine is my favourite female character in the movies of all time.

Jesse: "I know." (scratches wedding ring) This gesture right here is kinda painful to watch. It subtly displayed that people are disposable. And one person, in that point in time, was unloved.god!

This scene is impossibly beautiful always and forever, but it’s only now that I’ve lived a similar circumstance and left it that I can really appreciate what Linklater did with the last in the trilogy, Before Midnight. It doesn’t repudiate how real the connection in this scene is, far from it! But it does ask everyone who finds such romance in this scene to acknowledge that a real relationship can’t just survive forever on an intuitive connection and a few glorious moments, because people are complicated and loving one is complicated too. It’s work, sure, but not necessarily in the drearily Protestant way: if you do it right, and lovingly, it’s a joyful labor, one of discovering more and more about everything that drives the person you love and sharing with them more and more what drives you too. The whole trilogy taken together is the best representation of what it means to really love someone that I think I’ve ever seen, and I love this scene for being one of the high points, but seeing the low points depicted means so much too.

One my fav endings. Best trilogy ever. It’s so realistic. In your 20s u trying figure yourself out n just have fun but what’s bad is when your in your 20s you think you have it all figured out you’re really stupid as they realize in this movie. & in your 30s you confident in yourself, you’re career driven. Ready settle but how they both. Realize that believing when you in your 20s the world is your oysters and there’s a million jesses & celines you will run into when you 30 you realize that was all bullshit and you truly only connect w 2-3 people in your life & to never take that for granted. Jesse realizes he loves his son to death but he’s not happy. His wife doesn’t give him butterflies, or make him stumble truly be his self just being around Celine for 1hr he realizes she puts a twinkle in his eye from as soon as they see each other. She makes him smile n vice versa just by looking at her. There’s no way I’m giving this up a 2nd time. And I love every piece of it. Then the Nina Simone you found me just in time. So perfect. Reminds me of other fav love movie Benjamin Button. Brad Pitt n Cate found each other when they were supposed to that just gives you hope and faith that 10-20 years can pass and those feelings will still instantly ignite. Man this is so beautiful.

2:45 In this single second shot Jesse saw the rest of this life laid out in front of him and accepted it; for better or worse he was now tethered to this woman forever. And this was the moment his fate was sealed; in that apartment, with that song, and that look where he says "I know.". To be able to convey that with a single line and 8 seconds of facial expression is beyond extraordinary. Ethan Hawke is a fucking legend.

Every detail is so well connected in this story, remembering the final fighting scene in the 3rd. After she left, he stares for a second looking at the tea cup she left on the table. I imagine that he remembers this exact scene when she serves him this tea and they change their life forever chosing their relationship. Just the remembering of this scene is enough reason for him to go out and look for her outside of the room in the 3rd one. I know may this looks ovious but that blew my mind.
