@@liamo6889 Playing a character in any movie/show is a job like any other. Someone has to play the villain. Just as you say, you cannot judge people by their words, you also cannot judge people based on the character(s) they play. To prove my point, I direct you to another movie: Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix. The character Professor Umbridge was a nasty character that did all manner of terrible things to Hogwarts and its students. Actress Imelda Staunton took that role and when learning the lines, reportedly felt sick to her stomach at some of the terrible things her character would do. She hated it, but performed the role to the best of her abilities.

@@ivannechkin3665 I’ll give you this small piece of advice…Just let it go. You’ll drive yourself insane trying to comprehend the grammatical nightmare that is a KZbin comment section. It started out innocently enough; a misplaced “your” where it clearly shouldn’t have been used in a possessive tense. Then came the complete disregard for when to use “their” or “they’re”. Soon it devolved into a barely coherent, caveman-like gibberish where “then” replaces “than” and “of” is now predominantly considered the correct verbiage over “have” for any conjunction ending in “ve”. Calling out this complete and utter abortion of grammatical rule will only make you the target and result in you getting labeled a “Grammar Nazi” or, ironically, a “looser”[sic]. Again, pointing out their inability to spell on even a remedial level will only draw semi-coherent slurs and jeers from the contently retarded masses of basement dwellers that frequent this forum. It’s best to just chuckle and move along. 😉

The actor playing General O'Hara (Peter Woodward) is excellent with a classic received pronunciation (King's) accent. Tom Wilkinson and Jason Isaacs were great also. And of course Mel Gibson. The Patriot is a very entertaining film in spite of the historical errors in the film. At least it shows the 'Gettysburg of the American Revolution' -- the Battle of Cowpens, in South Carolina (some license was taken there also with the events, but Cowpens is one of the few classic double envelopments in military history, along with the Battle of Cannae, glad they got it on film, it's well done).

I often wonder if anyone understands the symbolism behind that jaunty fife tune. That's the march of the British Grenadiers. They're supposed to be the best trained and most experienced troops the crown had. So playing the song over an act of deception adds some contrast to wink at the audience. Plus it is a fun tune and adds an oceans 11 esque feel to the con.

He would have been better to have stayed in school and academics rather than the military and caused more travesty to the British had he NOT BEEN THERE. I’ve read up on Great Danes. I hear they form extremely loyal bonds with their families. I hear they can be destructive as pups so you need to train them early on in order for them to be more manageable when older and MUCH bigger. I hear they can be easy to train and stubborn. They’re also very friendly, which would factor into it. Don’t forget the size of these dogs as well. I imagine they consume lots of food. Now take into consideration that General Cornwallis most likely raised both of his Danes from pups. Also consider the fact that these dogs have most likely spent only a few months, possibly less, in the wilderness with Benjamin Martin. What does it say about Cornwallis, as a man, and as a leader, that his two supposedly loyal companions, would willingly and instantly abandon him the moment Benjamin Martin whistles for them.

I agree, great movie and story line but obviously it took creative liberties. If I remember the British wouldn’t attack and kill civilians during a war. They still believed in fighting with honor and respect. If the public back home knew of the “brutal” tactics like the Tavington did they wouldn’t be seen as gentlemen and maybe human

@@Wooster23 Really? Gosh, I seem to recall anecdotes about the British having alliances with the various Indian tribes....You know, come to think about it, it's mentioned in the DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE....so it's not exactly an obscure revelation....Anyway, these tribes were notorious for taking prisoners after fights, and burning them alive....The American Revolution was an 8 year war. And the Indians didn't simply burn people like what happened in the movie. They kept people alive for HOURS while roasting...So the reality of the war was far more sadistic than anything depicted in The Patriot. Anything else you want to explain to ME?

@@tommyjames2448 As I said, it is quite historically accurate. What are the two things that get criticized the most for inaccuracy in this movie? The church burning scene, and the part where Tavington shoots the little boy. Liberals whine that nobody got burned in the American Revolution, and that nobody killed children. Well, gosh, turns out people were burned alive THROUGHOUT the war, and little kids were killed throughout the war....and it was an EIGHT YEAR WAR....

@tgriffin3059 sounds like you're conflating my comments with someone else's comments. Like I said, it's very historically inaccurate. Yes, locations and general events occurred but were drastically over dramatized for the film. The English approach and French elements were also drastically egartated for the movie. Either way, it's still a great movie. Just don't watch it and think you know real history.

They don't teach it because it's not true. The source of the 3% myth is that only 80,000 veterans (3% of the population at the time) requested a pension, and that was in 1813, the first year the pension was allowed and 30 years after the end of the war. Many veterans had already died by that point, and many others simply didn't apply for one reason or another. The 3% claim only goes back at most about 30 years, and more likely less than 20 years, and has never had academic backing. In 1776, the colonial population was about 2.5 million. About two million were white and half a million were black slaves, with a smattering of free blacks in there as well. The slaves couldn't fight, nor could the females (with rare exception), removing 60% of the population from the fight. A significant portion of the population was under age 16, rendering them ineligible to participate in the army or militia, or over 60, likely incapable of participating. Scholarly estimates put the total number of men serving at any point during the war at a minimum of 250,000, or a quarter of all the white males in the colony and around 10% of the population overall. That alone crushes the 3% claim. When you look at those white males of an age eligible to fight, it was probably in the 35%-40% range. No war in US history has ever come close to touching that level. That doesn't count all the people supporting the army or militia through transport, food, construction, blacksmithing, digging ditches and fortifications, burying the dead, tending to the wounded, supplying buildings, and all the other things that militaries of the time needed. When all is said and done, it is very likely that over half the population contributed more or less directly to the war effort. I don't know why you're bringing the Russians into this. The French provided arms, naval support, and military officers and experts, and the Dutch provided critical loans to keep the colonial economy afloat. Russia played only a minor diplomatic role (an unsuccessful one at that, as by the time it even started to bear fruit, the Battle of Yorktown and the surrender of Cornwallis rendered any diplomacy moot), and Russia banned the text of the Declaration of Independence until at least 1855, fearful that it might ignite revolutionary activity in the Russian Empire.
