He's a reflection, but he also becomes part of the problem by perpetuating the evil in it. It's either that people will make up excuses for the Comedians or the Comedians will come up with the excuses. I don't admire or feel sorry for a goon who already admires and feels sorry for himself. It just becomes impossible to feel sympathetic for someone like that after a while. The Comedian isn't some genius, he's just more willing than others to be an asshole.

Donovan Jerome Before Watchmen retcon a lot of shit, the original graphic novel heavily implied that The Comedian murdered JFK and Hooded Justice. In the movie it showed us he was the one responsible. Keep in mind Before Watchmen came out a couple of years AFTER the movie.

This is what I love and absolutely despise about the comedian, he views himself as doing what needs to be done, and it being in the "right" way under the guise of a patriot, when in reality he's just becoming the monster he's sent to time after time to end. And instead of choosing to end conflicts with mercy, peace, and understanding; he ends it literally with the blood of those who should be saved, on his own hands and the false conviction that what he's accomplished is "correct" or "what has to be done"

Its said there's a fine line between patriotism and nationalism. The patriot wants the best of their country. The nationalist believes their country's actions are best, regardless. The Comedian has always been a nationalist. That's why he broke down crying in Watchmen, because his blind faith was going to lead the world into nuclear war.

Also, in afterthought, these books do show a mighty flaw in Alan Moore's genius comic landscape, though it may be purposeful. The sore lack of villainy. Beyond Moloch and the retconned Rawhead, there seems to be a lack of supervillains to provide counterpoint to the heroes... Which would cause an implosion in the continuity, though that might explain later events. I just think these books would have been an excellent way to explore and expand the bad guys. Cuz in a world where Nixon is more or less king, you'd have a lot of them...

That part, sadly, is based on true events. Many soldiers were ordered to do terrible things. I have one in my family. He rarely spoke about it. This lead to wars and conflicts like the Korean War and Vietnam War where America stepped in by joining the war or supporting a side to stop the spread of Communism and grain similar thinking allies. The Vietnam War was the worst one w/ very few Americans supporting the war and many of our troops dying w/ the U.S. not gaining anything. The aftermath of the war lead to many people mistreating veterans like they were responsible and many soldiers throwing away awards they received in protest.The war is remembered as a terrible pointless war that had many deaths.
