ReptileMountain.TV help! My blue tongue skink lost ALL of her toes. When we moved she had to be with our cousins friends and when she came back all of her toes are gone and she came back with a long scar on her tail (which is 100% healed up now) she has recovered and is back to help I just don’t know what to do about her toes 😭

Oh no! Better have check to ensure there isn’t anything significant going on. My guess is that the humidity wasn’t high enough and stuck shed on the toes caused amputation 😟

I've been doing research on BTS in hopes of getting one. I've been shocked by how many people in different groups on facebook and such have animals and have no idea what they have or how to take care of them. I'm glad they are asking for help, but just can't believe how many buy without knowing anything.

Initially I was surprised as well. I am always amazed how trusting people are of sellers and venders. A vender/shop/seller will say its “blah blah blah” and people trust it fully without any kind of fact checking. Which is great that they have such confidence in the “good” in others but sad because they can get scammed so easy. What gets my goat is venders/sellers/shop workers who don’t know enough to be accurate or helpful but just enough to be dangerously misguided and when they say an incorrect fact with such confidence people believe it.

I liked your car references. And it really makes sense too. I've kinda set my mind (and heart) on getting a northern bts now, although I'm worried I might not have the space, and I'm a little overwhelmed from watching all the different care videos and guides. As I said I'm afraid that I might not have the room for such a big animal, but I think, rather than settling for a smaller animal, I should wait till I have enough room, maybe clear some stuff out, and hold out for the new friend that I really want! Another concern is being able to find someone who sells them, as I live in a tiny country, and reptiles are not a big thing here, although it seems interest is growing. But in September there is an expo, so I'm hoping to figure something out then.

Like an estimate on when you typically sell and an idea on what your thinking for pricing is based on past experience. I would like to have my enclosure and set up ready before even purchasing a baby blue tongue and want to budget for it.

Even though this video is over a year old sadly the impulse buying is still in full force. Multiple times a day on the groups it’s post after post of what skink did I buy and how do I take care of it after they got it. Which still surprises considering the high price point on them.
@ReptileMountainTV
@ReptileMountainTV 5 жыл бұрын
I know right! Its amazing and sad. My hope is that as this upswing in popularity stabilizes the cultural norm will shift slightly to a "research and patience first" mentality over the "impulse and please wipe my butt mentality." Part of me wonders if experienced keepers who help correct husbandry blunders from folks who buy WC animals from uneducated vendors are enabling the vendors to take advantage of the good will of the experienced keepers. I know one vendor has actually told me, "when they buy from me I send them directly to you for care needs." Meanwhile I'm thinking...why do I get the burden of providing your customer with support?

The brumation really really freaks me out. I got my Pumpkin a year ago and am glad I eaited until I personally was ready. TC! Quick opinion if you would be so kind and awesome to give your advice. Hopefully it helps others. I'll do the long story short-ish. 1. I did research, but not enough before buying my skink. I found out what type I had after I got him home and watching YOUR videos. 2. Found out real quick he was a CB, not CBB, Halmahera. 3. Gave him about a few weeks to settle in and make sure he was eating and enclosure was good to go (humidity, heat, light, etc.) 4. Took him out today for the first time (after him hissing, puffing and making me chase him around his enclosure). He did #1 and #2 on the garden gloves I had on, and clamped down on said gloves a few times. 5. He just shed yesterday and it was a beautiful shed (humidity is maintaining steady at 80-90%). I have seen zero bugs in his enclosure or on him, but should I just keep waiting, or is there a better way to find that? Nothing in the water. 6. Brought him outside to see the world and after a while, he stopped struggling as we checked out bamboo plants, cacti and the real sun (from my hand). 7. He's been a little picky eating, but I remember you said a picky skink is just bored, or something like that. Just keeping on with the good cat food and small pieces of veggies and very minimal fruit. He seems to like orange peppers the most. 8. I have had to wake him up a few times to get him to come out at all as I was scared he was going to brumate, and based on what I believe you said, he is too young for that at about 3-6 months, roughly. Now he seems to be coming out a lot more. Especially when the humidifier starts fogging he likes that thing. My question with handling really is, would you just recommend daily interaction at this point...and if so, is there a way to pick him up where he doesn't think I am this killer person coming at him? Using food as a lure? I just don't want to associate food with what he perceives as a negative event. He is in a 36L modified HDX tub right now, but I have a 4ft PVC enclosure on its way now. At least that will have front sliding doors, viewing capability and more room. Have you seen CB Halmahera skinks completely chill out ever, or will there always be some type of fear in him? Thanks and hope this helps someone with a similar situation.
@ReptileMountainTV
@ReptileMountainTV 4 жыл бұрын
I would keep short handling sessions going daily or every other day as long as he is feeding. If he stops eating stop handling. Food can be a great bridge for building trust.

He is getting more inquisitive now I finally got the humidity above 16%. My house is so dry.... eco earth topped with cypress. If I can come up with a way to stop him from flinging it all in the water dishes and onto his basking slate..... ahh. I told him I’d make him into a belt! He just puffed his throat at me. We have our BT's waterdish on a piece of slate that's raised a few inches by a piece of PVC pipe hotglued to each corner. Her basking slate is raised the same way. It creates hides, adds floorspace, and keeps the substrate out of the waterdish. We found instructions for making them on BlueTongueSkink.net.

When I have to be gone under 5 days I provide a very large heavy water dish for adults with heat/light on timers/thermostats. I would say 2 weeks is too long to not be checked on. What if on day one they crap in their water they would be without water too long. Honestly I have a friend check in on them at day 4 and manage water needs. For anything over 4-5 days they need checked in on. I should also note I have remote video on the enclosures so I can see whats going on. As well as remote thermometer/hygrometer....

Males can sometimes lock with other less dominant males but its not the norm. You probably have a pair.

Can Blue Tongues be released into the wild after having lived in captivity?
@ReptileMountainTV
@ReptileMountainTV 5 жыл бұрын
Typically NO, not ever. However, herpetologists doing bona fide research will on occasion take wild animals and hold them captivity in laboratory settings with highly regulated and controlled parameters for short periods of time and then release again for study. Sometimes animals species (not Blue Tongues) that are extinct or threatened in the wild have been bred in captivity for the purpose of reintroduction. They are only reintroduced under official capacities with collaboration between wildlife officials and local authorities. Those animals are also highly screened by specialized veterinarians to ensure no pathogens were acquired in captivity that could be introduced into wild populations. Bottom line a pet blue tongue should NEVER be released under any circumstances. The risk of introducing pathogens into wild populations, disrupting genetic population integrity and the ecological balance is far to great.

I should add that it could actually be a crime in some places to release animals.

@@ReptileMountainTV thanks very much for your feedback about this. I honestly never thought that one lizard could upset the entire ecological balance of an environment.

Sure no problem. One animal can if it has a pathogen that the wild population doesn’t have good immune response too. Or if it has an incompatible gene that could be bred into a population. Plus, if it not returned the exact location of its lineage/origin it unnaturally throws genetics that were not supposed to be there. Lots can go wrong. 👍🏼👍🏼

Why don't you have a care sheet on Merauke?
@ReptileMountainTV

Amber Thomas Soon! It would be nearly identical to the Irian Jaya except for cage size. Meraukes get longer so they may need more room.

This is like listening to a teacher who is highly qualified for the job, but awful at teaching. Over half this video is entirely off topic with irrelevant "examples".

Thanks for the feedback. Could you please specify where I went off topic? Also, please list which examples I used you feel were irrelevant. Constructive criticism is much more “constructive” if the reviewer gives specifics otherwise it kinda sounds like whining. 😉 Thanks again.
