I was raised with 3 Kuvasz in Sweden, my mother was Hungarian and she wanted us to have Kuvasz. We lived in the country side and my memories with these faboulus dogs are just fantastic. O yes they protected us from whatever we where needed to be protected from:))) but in the same time they where the most loving dogs ever. My Father was the boss and they knew that, and the way they loved me and my sister and my mother was simply amazing❤

I had a Kuvasz girl from when she was nearly 3 months old. She was my best dog and got to the age of almost 14 years. In these years I had very small children in daycare and also had a cat and later on another cat and she never chased them as I told her not to. But she was on guard of unknown men and strong on a lead. She really is a big and amazing dog. And if you are good to her (which should be obvious) you will get the most loyal dog ever.

Being 74 years old and having a dog is something I grew up with, my dad always got mixed breeds dogs and the first dog I had when I was 18 was a malamute and his name was NaNu which is polar bear in the native tongue. He was a great dog and I took him backpacking on a 17 month trip I went on. The next day was a cross between an Akita Kuvas cross and his name was Ninja. Following his death I got a Kuvas male and he lived a long time- during that time I was raising my family in a remote area and often spent nights away from the family- I would always leave him to guard the family which he always did. After he passed away I was looking for a new dog and on a poster in the Vets office I saw a dog they called the Old Man’s dog - a wire haired pointing Griffin. Not ever having seen or heard of them before , well I found a breeder and got myself on. I used to hunt chucker and shoot ducks and lo and behold he’s a great dog and still with me- he’s 14 years old and besides being a little deaf is still in good shape . His is Huckleberry and call him Huck .

I had a really nice Hungarian typical Kuvasz, I don't recommend in any way having one of these in a city - only if you have a huge house and don't bother of them barking at any noise (which may also annoy all your neighbors)... Mine one was highly intelligent, intuitive and independent. The type of dog that knows how, when to react, without being overly aggressive. One occasion I had the other half of the gate open without noticing, after coming home from walking him, and he jump on a guy passing by the house, he didn't bite him, just stood with his pawn over the guy's shoulder and barked at his face, so as to tell hem to back off his territory - I couldn't apologize enough to him, and the dog didn't hurt him at all, only tried to assert that that was his territory. Probably if it was another breed, it could have attacked.. Luckily it was Kuvasz. Really smart, lightly boned, extremely agile and protective, and very fast for its size. If you live under cold weather in a farm, an isolated countryside house, or a castle is an amazing animal to interact with.. The dog really cared for anything happening around and would bark at any noise, even from a long distance. It seems his temperament is typical of a dog that needed to protect livestock in huge territories against beers and wolfs, and his white fur was developed to blend in with the sheep for some reason.

Just a slight historical error, the reason the Kuvasz is so rare: between WWI, WWII, and the communist take over of Hungary (breeding dogs was a rich Captialist crime to them) they were almost made extinct. By the late 1940's, there were and estimated 35-40 dogs left.

von Döbrögi I had two kuvas in Hungary. At that time, I knew that a kuvaz was worth half as much as a German shepherd. I always said that I have a dog DIESEL. I can't tell you more about the shedding of the hair, because they were in the garden and it wasn't that noticeable to me. I don't remember that about kuvas. If I combed it, it was rarely. A sheepdog needs to be a dog, otherwise how would it survive the cold under the open sky? In any case, there are far fewer problems with him than with a Pyrenean shepherd, or a Polish mountain shepherd, or the kuvac bred by the Slovaks, which have long hair and need to be combed constantly. In addition, both dog breeds are barely 200 years old. According to my knowledge, all three mentioned breeds were created from kuvaz, obviously for political reasons. On the other hand, kuvaz is a noble ancient species that has been cultivated for thousands of years.

They are a dominant breed, but not primarily animal aggressive, as they were not bred for fighting. They can accept easily everybody who belongs to the family (flock) and sucpicious with everything who does not.

I have had multiple Kuvaszok. They are accepting of other dogs with certain conditions. The Kuvasz likes to do the sniffing 1st. It is a dominance thing. If it is a larger dog that the Kuvasz thinks is approaching in an aggressive manner, it can act protective of me (the owner). It will be more relaxed if I show the other dog is friendly. Treat this breed with love and it is better than the secret service that protects the President and nothing on earth will love you more than a Kuvasz can.

I have one male. With smaller dogs he usually aproaches to know the dog and show dominance. If the other dog shows agressive behaviour, in a second aproach he will remember and will not tolerate... With big dogs, better not let them get closer. The important thing with a kuvazs is to pay attention to their inteligence. They are way too smart, more than most think, that why they are so independent and try to lead, so you need to lead from very early with them or you might have trouble when it gets bigger and you need to teach them what is acceptable and what is not...

Természetesen szívesen beszélgetünk a helyes kiejésről, miközben ez a fajta közelít a kihaláshoz, lassan, a ritka sivatagi macskafajták egyedszáma is meghalagja a kuvaszokét. Mi próbálunk tenni értük, esetleg Ön is?
