He's right, the most important rule to absolutely adhere to is to wash your hands after handling them, or especially after cleaning the tanks. The salmonella bacteria is naturally on their bodies & doesn't hurt them, but if you, say, play with a turtle & then go make a sandwich without having washed up, You can spend a night like this poor guy with stomach cramps, diarrhea, &/ vomiting.

That's so funny when I first saw this video and this guy I thought of Shaggy from Scooby-Doo but would like to add I have three turtles myself the youngest is 17 years old ,like birds they live a long time with the proper environment. But Shaggy the turtle guy in this video is very good and knowledgeable and his facts are right . Great video first time checking him out don't know if he has more buy if so I'll definitely check them out if not do more maybe on tank set ups ,live feeding . Wow. I was around 8 years old when I watched your turtle videos on my small ipod. Quickly fell in love with them and never thought that I would be able to get one other than your normal red eared slider. Ten years later I finally got my dream turtle / razorback musk and this video got recommended to me while I was binging turtle videos researching filter replacements again. My AP Biology class has had four eastern painted turtles as class pets for the past two weeks. I'm pretty much the only student caring for them. I already have them a heating lamp, a basking dock, various food (I feed them a combination of fresh vegetables, dried brine shrimp, dried blood worms, turtle pellets, and Ice burgh lettuce) small amounts daily. There in about a 60 gallon tank (we caught them from a ditch behind the school and are going to release them back in a few weeks). I'm making an above tank basking platform for them, but they already have a floating basking dock. The only problem is that for the past two weeks, I haven't had them under a UVB light. I've ordered a bulb and it should arrive in about two days. Do you think they'll be ok? Will they have any permanent damage?

I bought my red slider in 12/2010, I have never bought fancy uv lights, nothing etc...I have a huge container were it resides, along with boulders where he can bask on, which he does, I change his water every 14 days, and he even knows when it's feeding time, he recognizes the sound of the food container, and that's basically how I've taken care of it..he will be turning 4 yrs old in 11/2014

Garet Lapierre Probably not. Turtlrs will bite most other things in the tank. Also, remember most turtles don't stay small and require very large tanks. They also can live for many decades.

I don't mind that they're long-lived and might get a lot bigger, really, though if I do get one, I'm planning on getting a smaller male like one of the ones you showed in this video. I'm still not sure which kind I specifically want to get, If I get a bigger tank than required for the species, would I be able to keep two males of the same type (depending on the species)? I'm not sure if all/any species of turtle require socialization, but I just think a tank with only one animal would look kind of empty. Of course, I wouldn't get more than one and put them in the same tank if it's detrimental to the animal.

In 2006 my little brother and I got a turtle... much to my mom's dismay. She let us have it figuring it'd be dead within a year. 2 years ago we finally made a pond for it outside instead of keeping it in a tank. Last year it got carried off by a hawk. Watching this video surprised me, we never had the proper lights for it, yet it lived longer and we've had it longer than most pets we've had.

How long have you had it? Do you have a tank of proper size (40gallons or larger) with double filtration? If you just got your turtle was the tank setup at least 2 weeks before bringing the turtle home so the nitrogen cycle could start and beneficial bacteria could start growing to 'eat' ammonia/nitrite that will be introduced? Do you have a 100% dry basking area of proper temperature for your turtle species and UVB lighting?

MC REAPER Umm, it's in a tiny bucket/tub? You realize in this video my turtles are only in that for the video. They have big tanks! They were only in this to show on video. This is not a home for a turtle! You need a LARGE tank, filters, UVB lighting, 100% dry basking area of proper temperature, and so on. Sounds like your turtle has nothing it needs.

MC REAPER Picture won't help. From what I can tell you have a tiny 'bucket' without anything the turtle needs. I don't know what type of turtle you have. But lets assume a Red Ear Slider? If so, RES need around a 75gallon tank, or larger. Sadly your turtle will be dead soon in a 'bucket' like he is in currently.

Long story short: You would need at least a 40 gallon (151,5 liter) tank,a basking area with UV-B light,regular lights,heater,filters and a thermometer. As hatchlings,they are carnivorous and when they grow up they are omnivorous,give them fish,shrimps,cabbage,lettuce,dandelion greens,etc. and don't overfeed them! Also,if it's sunny outside,just take them out for 30 minutes and it's enough! If they refuse to eat or swim lopsided (chin line and body width not in 180 degree angle),take them to the vet!

Great video! Very informative. Tks! ps. like many kids from the 60's, I had a painted turtle that came with the plastic palm tree dish. Purchased from a. Woolworth's Store. I never knew of any friend getting salmonella poisoning from their turtle. I used to give mine pecks on nose every day! And, occasionally we gave him raw hamburger 2 boot! Of course, these little guys had a short life. Exp. for my teenage brother's turtle . He put his in an aquarium with an above the H2o, ledge. I would take him out & let him run around. Boy,was he fast! He loved having the underside or his neck stroked. He would stretch it out so, I wouldn't miss any part of it! Good Times. And, no salmonella! ?? tks.again!

Turtles are often low cost. But, a proper turtle setup is easily $500+. Most pet turtle species can live 50+ years with proper care. Sadly, many pets are kept improperly and don't live very long.

Kathy Bruce No :( 20 gallon isn't large enough for any turtle species. Also, hex tanks are usually tall and not very wide or long. Will make a nice fish tank though!

Thank you for your informative video, which really helps a lot since I am planning to get a baby turtle. I went to the turtlesale website for a Eastern Painted turtle as you mentioned you bought yours from them (I really like yours as he/she looks so beautiful and energetic), but I couldn't find it in their website under "Baby Turtles". I really hope to find one that won't grow too big, 4.5 inches maximum for a male Eastern Painted turtle seems to be an option according to your video. Also is a UVB light essential if I live in a tropical country at the equator? It's constant summer where I live and my house gets very hot natural sun every day of the year. If I put the tank next to the window it will get a ton of good natural sun. The sun seems like it should do the trick, since that is what the turtles will get if they lived in the wild...I'm genuinely curious about this! I couldn't find much info and I've never owned a turtle so I would appreciate any tips and opinions on this

Hey thanks for the reply! What if it's an outdoors enclosure with no glass? Could put a mini tunnel that leads in the house as well so it can go indoors during any rain

Oh good point...what if there are shaded areas with bushes and a sheltered area/turtle house added to it? I've always liked the idea of doing a really natural set up (can't do it in my current house but im not staying here forever thankfully). I've seen wild turtles hanging around in lakes where I live...there must be a way for them to survive out here

Rob Smith No turtles stay small. That is an old myth and lots of baby turtles were abused and had very poor living conditions. Most pet turtles will need at least a 150 gallon tank.

I have a Western Painted Turtle. She is about 10-11 inches. My problem is she hates light. When I found her, she was in the shade near the river. Since I brought her home she will not leave the water and makes a noise any time I turn on a house light. Do you have any idea what I can try to get her used to it?

+Earthling1984 I had a good reason for my snapping turtle after a flood she was drying out and not moving she is now fed ONLY live food she has a cave a rock a plant to hide in as she is in a five gallon but I'm upgrading soon so that she is happy she also falls asleep when I pet her head also no I can't set her free people around here fish for them and kill them I think that's what happened to the huge one in the pond I live by and no the shit police don't care and the fake animal service dosnt do anything where I live I have to keep her until I'm able to get miles away from where I'm at I'm sure you understand why I'm worried for her safety for now she can eat her fish and millworms until she is happy and out in a safe place

I would like to add something to what you said about turtles not biting, i had a Red eared slider, Yellow belly slider, and Painted turtle (i think it was western painted? I cant remember) and i would hold them every day. Eventually they got too big for their tank and i had to get them a much larger tank outside, and i didnt get to see them often. Eventually i let the turtles go at a local lake, (this was maybe a month later) and they were vicious. They would bite anything that came near them (if anyone cares, the Yellow bellied slider never bit anything unless they came really close, the others bit a lot sooner). This isnt supposed to turn people away from turtles, just a warning. Treat your turtles similar to a dog companionship wise. You may not realize it, but turtles do grow to trust one individual over the other and etc.
