I'd love to get an auction horse someday but right now I'm very happy with mine - by the time I got her I'd already been working with her and hanging out with her for four years. there was nothing about that horse I didn't know - so when her owners moved on to a new chapter in life and couldn't keep all their horses I felt 100% comfortable with taking her - and then they ended up giving her to me for free! My biggest blessing ever!

When I was 12 years old I talked my dad into finding my forever riding horse. I took my barn manager with me. This horse was a 4-H State Champ. Another girl at my barn was going to buy him but didn't want to wait until after show season. I bought him for $800 in 1980. When I took him to the fair, everyone knew him. He not only taught me how to ride, he was my best friend. Take your time, check with other people if you can and be careful when buying a horse.

What good advice. The things I've seen at auctions blow my mind. Imagine getting home with your sweet gentle horse about the time the drugs wore off. Imagine ballistic half ton of power charging off your trailer. Worse, your new horse can't even walk off your trailer as pain meds wore off. You must know horses before buying at an auction or private sellers you don't know.

Really good advice. I am legally blind and 62 years old. I worked as a working student for two years when i was a teenager and fell inlove with dressage. I rode as often and as much as i could and as often as i could. But i have never owned my own horse. I just couldnt afford it. 😢 it would be insane for me now to go to an auction and buy a horse. The expese is something to consider too. Now at my age i think a pasture pet would be wonderful. An old retired buggy horse or an old retired draft horse that just needs love and good care.
@HorseLady11097 сағат бұрын
That would be wonderful for both you and the horse. ❤

My daughter rescued 2 horses from the Southern Michigan Kill Pen, and the gelding has founder. 😢 The mare they believe is in her 20s and the gelding is 18. The mare clearly came from gje Amish. She really likes my daughter. She took to her almost immediately. We found a really good farrier who is helping us with the geldings founder. Thank you for posting another wonderful video, Shae! This is such a great video! 😊 I first rode whenever I was a little girl...I borrowed a pony from my parents' friends. That was the best summer! I purchased my first horse at age 44. I got my Dusty by word of mouth. He was actually used in a 4H class with young children. My other two I bought from friends. They were all wonderful horses. I'm 65 now, so I doubt that I'll ever own horses again, but you just never know. I'm looking forward to going along on the auction tour with you! It will be so much fun! ❤

Shae, your knowledge and experience of sales has stood you in good stead. Beauty is almost perfect. For a four-year-old, that is unheard of! Dodger can and will (with consistency, love and time) work out of his minor quirks, and with Belle, you got a two-fer! Ezzy is gorgeous and can (eventually) do what you planned for her mom. Naveen is kind, and with some miles on him, he is going to be a very nice ride. Bagheera is special. She may not be what you thought, but you got the right horse. She has been the perfect babysitter for the foals, and you can confidently put beginners on her. All in all - you have done well! 🥰

I learnt how to ride on a lease horse I was also taught how to train a horse as well, and when I was ready to buy I ended up buying the lease horse (quarter horse) he was a gelding, I bought my second horse a couple of years later from my friends sister he was a black Arabian stallion, he wasn't for the faint of heart but he was a good boy, I went to auction too, even though I loved many of them, they just went up too high or they had something wrong health wise, the only one that was almost suitable she was a 13 yo mare, could do liberty she could jump too,😅 she had a little bit of a sketchy history but she was so good, I didn't buy her only for the fact that I was already had 2 horse's to rent land for, I think about her often, i hope she went to a good home. 😢

Some get a lift noticing that spring is right around the corner. The days are getting longer already. The sun is up a few minutes earlier and sets a few minutes later. Feeling this always lifts my spirits in spring Getting direct sun exposure really helps, too. It helps our health and outlook, so try for about 20 minutes of direct sunshine on your face and eyes daily. Studies showed that taking a good quality Omega 3 oil capsule was even more effective than taking antidepressants, so it's worth a try. The thyroid functions best on Omega 3. Our diets may feed us more Omega 6 & 9, so taking Omega 3 capsules helps by displacing the 6 & 9 with the preferred Omega 3, so the thyroid functions better. This may help us to feel better physically, mentally and emotionally. Everyone's different, of course. It's an old study which has held up for many people over a long time. It's always worth a try. Best wishes to you. ❤

Buying from a private seller gives you the chance to see where and how the horse has been kept, and you can assess the conditions of the other horses, the stable buildings and grounds condition. etc., all things that give clues as to how diligent the owners are, which may or may not also apply to how they care for their horses. I have learned a lot from how Shae evaluates horses at auctons, what she looks for, and why she decides a horse doesn't measure up. And I am not a novice, though I don't currently have a horse. I always find it encouraging to make my own assesment visually then see if Shae's anaysis and mine match up, and it validates my assessment if we both notice the same thing. If I don't notice something she picks up, if I've been paying attention, it teaches me what to look for in future. I'm looking forward to the auction marathon.....

Dodger is beautiful and in every sense would seem the perfect option even to a first buyer, but to be honest at his age he has issues that can only be worked out with a competent trainer, he will come on with the right training but with a first time owner they might become despondent and give up that might be the reason he' s ended up at an auction, he is at the right place

Quarantine is definitely a biggie. Your auction horse might actually pick up an illness at the auction itself. Some of those illnesses can take a few weeks to show up. Horses can also carry diseases that can be passed to humans. So consider those too and make sure you wear different clothes with the quarantined horse than you would with your other horses. And be aware of your personal hygiene

Thank you again for sharing your wisdom with all of us!! Blessings!!

Shae you are sooo very right about purchasing auction horses. I honestly think Dodgers' previous owners "abused" him in the barn. Maybe he didn't run fast enough......so when the reached the barn.......they hurt him really bad. Dodgers trepidation & fear in entering the barn says it all
